Watch Bald Eagle eggs hatch

They certainly have grown. And yes, their feet are big!

Conditions look a lot more pleasant than they were over the weekend when it was 3C, raining and they were all huddled together, bracing against the cold.

Is that ice all over the camera?

The one open corner shows that it’s snowing there. So probably yes.

It was almost cleared off for a bit, but its covered again.

Wow… that’s scary. I hope the family is all warm enough!

Now there’s a note at the top of the screen that says “The eaglets are fine, but the lens is ice-coated. We are keeping an eye on it.”

Someone, quick, knit three little-bitty scarves!

I don’t think much of spring in Iowa.

Typically, it’s better than this, but this isn’t unheard of. Right now it’s about 35F in Cedar Rapids, with a low of 30F for tonight. About 200 miles south of here, it’s almost 90F.

Iowa also boasts summers with heat indices often above 110F (yay, sweat!) and winters with wind-chill indices down to -40F and below (yay, freezing to death!). If it wasn’t for fall, I don’t know why anybody would stay here. :stuck_out_tongue:

The eagles survived yesterday’s bad weather. They just had fish for breakfast.

Here is a link to Raptor Resource’s blog which includes a nice photo of Mama Eagle sheltering the chicks with her wings.

All the snow is melted now. I have to say the shots I saw earlier of the bloody fish guts all over the snow was something I do not need to see again.
Mom eagle just fed them all again and is now trying to sit on them, however I don’t think 1/3rd of an eaglet could fit under her, let alone three eaglets! They are really getting big! I did not expect them to grow so fast but I suppose they have to grow into those feet as soon as possible.

I love how the eagles clean house by moving over twigs and debris until the rotting corpse of yesterday’s meal is buried. If only that worked at home.

It doesn’t?!?

I haven’t looked for a while - wow! the chicks have grown. They are ~3x as big as the last time I saw them

You can see their real feathers starting to come in, too

They’ve certainly grown a lot more, although they’re still rather gangly. At least they seem to be starting to understand what their feet are supposed to do.

They must have cast-iron throats and stomachs. Yesterday they were tussling over a bone (backbone of a fish?) and #2 grabbed it from #1 and gulped it down whole.

I saw one of them exercising its wings today. That was cool. Those wings are really growing in from the stubby little things they once were. Their heads are really becoming eagle-head shaped, too. This is such a fascinating process to watch! I watch from both home and work.

Anyone else still watching these guys? They’re getting so big! And their feathers are coming in… and they are walking around the nest now!

Yes, I checked in on them a couple of days ago. They are huge!

Still watching them here, too!
