Watching Grass Grow - actually, it was quite interesting.

There was a thread a week or so ago in which I was asking for suggestions for pointless or inadvisable activities - one such activity I already had underway was Watching Grass Grow - I planted a potful of mixed birdseed and installed a webcam, sending live pictures of the developing grass to the internet every two minutes.

The camera software also enabled me to capture and archive images - which I set it to do every five minutes - the resulting picture archive - seven days worth of it - has been assembled into a short time-lapse movie - and actually it turns out that watching grass grow is quite interesting after all.

I find it quite uplifting to watch, even if I say so myself - although credit should go to the grass, really - it did all the hard work - I merely sat and watched.

The movie, and a description of the project, can be seen here:

It’s worth watching right to the end - you’ll see why…

Yes, it was worth watching to the end - despite my daughters complaints!

(“Mummy, please turn that scary music off!”)

I found the music after editing the movie - it was almost exactly the right length and I thought it was more sort of pregnant with expectation than scary…

Loved it, thanks.

That was great, thanks for sharing.

That’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing.

You are a genius. Please keep up the good work!

Thanks!

I will be nailing jelly to a tree sometime in the next week or so, if that helps…

Will you be herding cats any time soon?

Very cool. That music isn’t by Phillip Glass, by any chance?

There was a great NOVA episode on time-lapse/high speed photography called “Moving Still”. The best part was the decomposing* mouse.

  • well, not exactly decomposing, per se…

Loved it. I’d say there was definite entertainment there.

That was just…so very pleasant. Undemanding but engaging, stimulating and relaxing at the same time. An analeptic for my peace of mind. I wish I had something to offer you in return, besides thanks.

Yeah… can you say Koylawnisqatsi?

You know, the extent to which that morphed with the Pumpkin’s Hummer I had playing in the background was pretty stunning.

I lol’d. Bravo.

If I can collect enough cats together in one place to try it… wait… that would be the objective, wouldn’t it?

It’s a piece I found on Soundsnap.com (a free sounds and loops site) - I don’t think it’s by anyone well-known.

Dude, I have about 7 dirt patches in my lawn that need grass. Can you come by with your magic seed and help me out?

(post deleted - never mind)

That vid was extremely cool and very well done.

Ditto.
