This link has an update on Watchmen - basically they have moved into pre-production, but with changes in studio leadership, the team has to “re-pitch” the story to retain funding. But the basic design and story components sound interesting - no real spoilers on the site, near as I can tell. They do have a teaser about an actress interested in the Silk Spectre role:
Apparently, it’s Hilary Swank, but she is never named
And here is a link to an update about the much-further-along V for Vendetta. A much shorter update with an interesting tidbit about the actor in a key role…
Woo I can’t wait for Vendetta to come out, I’ve got high hopes! I don’t tink I’d be disappointed by missed details as long as they get the general feel of the story and plot right, which shouldn’t be difficult.
I’m looking forward to The Watchmen too, but it seems like a Watchmen movie has been “in the works” for ages now, so I’m holding back my excitement. I’m also curious to find out if they’d change the ending for a movie…
…as from what I recall, the ending was pretty damn bleak. Lots of people die, the bad guy who killed 'em all goes scot free and we realize hey, it took a huge mass killing for us to realize that we need to stop fighting. Pretty grim, I came away from that wondering how long it would take the various countries to start fighting again. Human nature, after all.
Actually, I saw a sneak preview of the script for Watchmen, and it ends with Dr. Manhattan averting the disaster with seconds to spare while Rorschach drops Ozymandias off a building to his death. Rorschach quips “He won’t do anyone hurm from now on!” Meanwhile, Nite Owl and Silk Spectre address the governments of the world and tell them Ozymandias’ master plan, leading to all the countries’ leaders agreeing to put down their weapons for all time. While being shown on every TV screen and monitor across the world, Daniel and Laurie embrace and kiss passionately, and Rorschach peels off his mask and wipes a tear from his eye. Rousing, John Williams-style music plays as fireworks illuminate the sky, created by a very happy Dr. Manhattan, who has made his peace and now wears PANTS!
as there was little doubt that Ozymandias’ plan was going to be revealed and everything he thought was going to happen was indeed going to happen…because of him; and Rorschach’s journal.
I hear ya, holmes, but I am not so sure it was that clean:
since Rorschach sent his journal to that right-wing fanatics newletter/paper, I assumed it would be another “conspiracy theory” that may or may not get traction - after all, Adrian Veidt has tremendous resources with which to squelch a small voice, right? And who knows, folks like Dr. M might even help him if the fate of the world was at stake…
When Ozymandias asks Dr. Manhattan if his plan would work, Dr. Manhattan made a cryptic remark and as he walked up/thru the wall, he passed Ozymandias’ globe, which caused a mushroom effect…and a look of fear crossed Ozymandias’ face. Considering Dr. Manhattan is aware of past/future/present, I took that to be a sign of things to come.
That combines with the Journal convinced me.
