water on the car floor

Looking for some help and possible remedies.
I’ve got a 2008 corrolla that has water pooling up in the front and back passenger side floor boards.
There is a ridge of metal between them that separates the front from the back, that would presumably prevent water from one side migrating to the other.
THere is a lot more water in the back
We’ve had a lot of rain so its been filling up (and we’ve been vaccuming it out) daily
Last night with the car in the garage, and no rain, we had water repool on the floor
It isn’t AC condensation, the drain for the AC condensation appears to be working
No water is visibly dripping in

Is it possible we have a window seal that is leaking? I’ve heard that it might be a drain plug in the door that is clogged?

This might be a red herring…our windshield rubber gasket doesn’t appear perfectly seated on the top of the windshield so at 75mph it vibrates and squeals, I shoved a piece of rubber underneath that gap to stop the noise.

ANy advice…is it likely a plugged drain? How to fix?

Does this car have a sunroof by any chance? A very common way for water to get in is that the sunroof drain tubes get clogged with gunk and can’t drain properly.

no sunroof

The AC drain could be partially blocked; it could be able to deal with the drip from the evaporator but not a deluge of rainwater.

check for torn door seals on that side of the car.

Is there water in the trunk? I had a car where water was coming in through a bad tail light seal, and it would pool in the spare tire well and seep through the carpet, under the rear seat, and soak the rear footwells.

if you find the source of the leak, it would behoove you to pull the carpet out of the car and let it dry thoroughly else you risk it getting moldy.

probably not part of it; those are usually for aero or wind noise. the windshield is “glued” into the opening which provides the seal.

No water in the trunk

I’m fairly convinced its not the AC drain, since the water pools mostly in the back seat floorboards, and there appears to be no physical means for the water to get from the front floor board to the back, due to the 4 inch high ridge of metal that separates the two.

My bet is on a clogged front door drain hole where it meets the rear door. When the car is stationary some water ends up in the front. When you’re driving the water flows to the rear.

two things:

that beam most likely is not a solid piece of sheetmetal. They usually have holes in them for lightening, or gaps between it and the floorpan. See here. Water in the front can easily get to the back, and vice versa. Also, the carpet and backing mat can wick water from one area to the other too.

The carpet going over the hump is dry, so I tend to think wicking is not occurring. I found open holes in the bottom of the doors and shoved a screwdriver in each one…not blockage was felt.

I did find rubber plugs on the underside of the floor pans and removed those to at least drain out the accumulating water

Does your car have heater vents under the front seats to keep rear passengers warm? If so, that’s one way AC condensation could get to the back.

Also if you park under trees, it’s possible for the drains in the intake cowling to get clogged.

However if your windshield looks loose and is bouncing around when driving, I think that’s a very good place to start.

No heater vents in the back.
What are these intake cowling drains you speak of? I’ll check them if I knew how.
