I have a nice little beruit table (8ft by 2ft) that I want to rest on three inflated tubes (typically used for sledding) to play in a pool…if i soak the table in something like Thompson’s Water Seal will it protect from chlorine etc so I could use the table again in a dry area? Further, the top of the table has been spray painted, so would the water proofing agent protect from having the paint run in the pool? The key is that the table won’t be soaked as it is resting entirely on tubes and no one will be jumping in and out of the pool- the water would be pretty calm… i’m already expecting a decent amount of ripping for this post…
Part of it would depends on what kind of paint. The water seal may not be able to penetrate and many not be able to adhere to the painted surface. I know people who make stablized wood, home made Micarta, by infusing with water seal but your table top is a wee bit large to get inside any affordable vacuum chamber. You can get better penentration by thinning though I don’t know what would be right to thin Thompsons with.
Your best bet would be to do some testing with scrap wood painted and finished the way you want. You might also experiment with solvent and water based polyurethane but I’d thin then for this application as a penetrating finish will protect from water better than a surface finish.
Why would anyone rip you over this?
And what the heck is a Beruit table? I’ve never heard the term before.
Where are my manners. Let me extend to you this laurel and hearty handshake to you. Welcome to SDMB.
A Beirut table is a ping pong sized table, used to play Beirut on. Beirut is a drinking game, similar to beer pong, but without using paddles. It is often, incorrectly, called beer pong, but they are two different games.
