Watermelon Helmet

At this point, Tony Barber’s Underwear is probably unconscious under a table somewhere in Queensland, so I guess we’ll have to wait at least another 12 hours to find out how it went. I’m keen to hear.

I highly recommend ["]durian](http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~durian/[/url) as it is the right size and it has pointy things which look cool. For that and other reasons you can believe me whan I say you will stand out from the crowd.

Durian. Scroll down for the photo.

Just be careful not to swallow any of the seeds: they can cause appendiseedis!

:stuck_out_tongue:

Is this a weird Ozzie custom or something? I’ve never heard of watermelon helmets before (my location = southern USA). And we have plenty of watermelons down here!

To the poster who suggested durians == wicked!

I once saw a guy walking down the street with a jack o’lantern carved from a pumpkin on his head. Very surreal.

Just curious, Q.E.D., have you actually worn a watermelon helmet, or are you just pulling this out of your ass?

No, not me. I searched the intenet and came up with nothing in the way of instructions, so I just thought about the most logical way to make one, and that’s what I came up with.

Ok, so that’s a fancy way of saying I pulled it out of my ass. You try that with a watermelon!

I carved a watermelon like a jack-o-lantern.

I’m not sure if it’s only an Aussie thing. All I know is that you often see sections of the croud wearing them at the cricket.

I would love to hear how it went…

Not enough time to dry it thoroughtly and apply shelac, or else you could have a watermelon-version of the Hawaiian helmet:

Wow! Australia sounds like a really cool place!

The closest I’ve ever come to making a watermelon hat is making a Hairy Buffalo…but thats a completely different animal.

Well, thanks everyone for the advice. I made my helmet on Saturday afternoon. I did a pretty piss-poor effort - basically I just cut a round melon in half, although the next morning I made some pretty cool horns out of the remaining half. My roomate went to a big effort with his - it looked a lot like Magneto’s helmet, and he even did a sun-visor out of the remaining bits to wear when it got too hot.

It was a pretty good day, from what I can recall, but the “Goon-of-Fortune” certainly did a number on me. Most people put in a bit of effort. I’ll post some pictures for anyone who is interested after I develop them.

(I also found a pair of Brown Stubbies to wear at K-Mart. I got them two sizes too small. I can’t believe that adults actually still buy them - they even had a little pocket in the front that was perfect for my durries.)
