This is fascinating reading. And a great thread to bookmark. It should be required reading for every newbie.
Being a relative newbie myself, I’d managed to piece together the backstory to some of these tales via the bits and pieces referenced at various times, but others had remained a mystery. I remember the first time someone explained Wally in a thread. It was a huge revelation.
When I registered I felt like I was entering a large ballroom where there was a cocktail party going on, and most of the people there knew each other already. Everyone was terrifically friendly and helpful to me, but there were all these inside jokes and mysterious references to people and events that I didn’t understand.
Thanks to all the posters who have shared their explanations of the milestone events of the SDMB.
But to echo SNenc, could everyone please fully explain the references? For example, I still don’t know the origins of “OG SMASH”.
This should be the 33rd of May question…I took four hours to find!

It was somewhat off the boards - and I don’t have the email to know how to link to it (I don’t even know if its still “public”, or if beth wants it shared), but one moment that I thought was really special was when Euty took it upon himself to make an SDMB guestbook for evilbeth, her husband, and Emma Kate. Euty managed to hide it, calling the thread a “special project” and requesting us to email him to find out what it was so that we could write a message in it.
I’ve always wondered if evilbeth had time to email you, Euty, and what did you send to HER (or had you planned of that?)
I just thought that it was the sweetest thing someone could do, and I’m sure it made for a very special gift.
There have been other moments of such great frienship and compassion here. Whenever someone loses a loved one, be it pet or family/friend, or if someone is ill. WallyM7 is the most well remembered, because he is the reason a lot of us are here, and he made us all laugh and cry, but there are so many others - it seems every day someone has something important to share, and the boards are always ready to offer up prayers and good vibes and any support they can, even if its just a couple of words on a mostly anonymous message board.
I love this place, with all its quirks (yes, even the really SLOW moments). I hate it when a day goes by and I can’t get my “fix”. This thread is so wonderful - I hope people contribute a lot to it!

Another less notable but interesting troll was the fool who’s last sock is TooSexyForMyComputer, i think. After his many bannings, the mods finally changed his status (usually “Member” or “Banned”) to “Too Stupid for Words”.

Oh yeah, that was one of concrete’s incarnataions, IIRC. I think he posted to 3F at one point as well.
Since we can’t search for “OG”, how about a little enlightenment about what this means?
“Og Smash” began in an anti-Christian thread in the Pit shortly after the return from the temp board where the poster, who has since been banned, I believe, kept writing “son of God” as “son og god.” The logical conclusion of all this was the invention of a ruthless and vengeful god who yelled “Og Smash!” and beat mortals with a club.
Another moment I forgot: RosieWolf and the rest of her trailer park, taking their family feud to the SDMB, shortly after the attack on the USS Cole.
This thread was one of the most loving threads I have ever read on these boards. I had long admired Scylla prior to this, but after this one, feeling the tears stinging in my eyes, I realized what a great person he must be. And he’s just one of many.
It was later featured in teemings. And rightly so.
There was the huge row where someone proposed a poster beauty contest of sorts for best poster. A lot of feelings got hurt on that one.
There was the temporary self-retirement of a respected poster who got a bit too carried away with trying to make a point about racial discrimation by using racially inflammatory language.
There was the time Chronos used a 4 letter word.
There was the grossest thing that ever came out of your body thread won by … hmmm… I forget… but her thing was uber-mega nasty. All competitors retired from the field as her story (in installments) began.
