It’s been…since whenever that was on…that I last heard the theme song, and I couldn’t quite get it, until you said “Whomp on keys” and it clicked right into place. 
Now it’s stuck in my head, but I’m afraid I still can’t help you.

There was one episode (may have been mulitple parts) that was a clip show hosted by Henry Fonda; he introduced clips showing some of the best scenes for each of the characters. It didn’t have the regular opening credits, but did have O’Connor and Stapleton singing the theme song for the audience in the studio. They really enunciated the LaSalle line. That may have been the source of the recording you heard.
Well, I wouldn’t put it past those Hollywood airheads to get this wrong, but since the series was set in Indianapolis, there was no beach.

Just checked–this page agrees with me.
It SOUNDS like a schoolyard counting chant, like “eenie meenie miney moe” or “my mother told me to pick the very best one (and you are not it…and however many other syllables you needed to add to keep your worst enemy from being picked)”…
But that’s just my interpretation. Considering that neither character was Jewish, you have to wonder why they’re slinging Yiddish around like it’s pennies, but hey, it’s TV…

On further listens, I think the first bit may be ‘we’ll sing a groovy song’, but I’m 100% on the rest of it. It sure SOUNDS like ‘neat, sweet’, but ‘we’ll sing’ makes more sense. >_>
