Carrier is an excellent example. The “Great Man”, the self proclaimed greatest bizniz man ever, the super genius, got played. Bigly. And jobs STILL went south to Mexico.
Yes, Der Trihs is ridiculous, and if you haven’t noticed, you’re his Doppelgänger on the right. Superior in many ways— pomposity, bombast, prostate size— but eerily similar in your skill at constructing a caricatured replica of the world out of your own Tinkerturds.
This is one of the most amazingly hypocritical things I’ve ever read here. You’re literally chastising liberals for both thinking that they’re better than conservatives, and for not actually being better than conservatives. That’s fantastic. You’ve really outdone yourself.
Anyway, speaking as a gay man, the election of Donald Trump has completely fucked me. The only thing standing between me and my right to marry is the likelihood of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s brain throwing a blood clot. There’s a solid chance of seeing a North Carolina-style “freedom of religion” law being adopted at a national level - which will essentially be the end of any sort of legal protections for homosexuality anywhere in the nation. Also, there’s been a really lovely spike in hate crimes since he started his campaign, and now that he’s won, it’s not exactly subsiding.
Explain to me again why I should give one single fuck about any one of the miserable shits who put this abomination into office?
Why wouldn’t you?
This election was freaky close; imagine you hear a group of Trump voters talking, and one of 'em says “you know, I would’ve voted for Hillary, if not for X.” And this assertion is met with nods and well-sure-that-goes-without-saying sentiments.
You wouldn’t want to hear what that X was? I’d sure want to hear what X was.
Ha ha! Yeah, because we (conspiratorial wink) know that the reason Black fellas make up such a disproportionate amount of the prison population is because they are known to commit just exactly that much more crime than the White fellas! My Brother!
I hadn’t heard this before, though I’m guessing it’s a variation on an older theme borrowed for this purpose. Dunno why, just the vibe I’m getting.
Anyway, the completely over-the-top action, coupled with the setup that makes it sound like it’s leading somewhere else entirely, gave me a good laugh. Thanks.
Because not giving a single fuck about any one of them got Trump elected.
I was going to just leave that here as a short pithy answer…but…
The whole premise is that the Democrats have to do a better job in reaching out to some of those people who voted for Trump. If they don’t, they will lose again.
You have to internalize that the whole country doesn’t have the same experience as you, and if you alienate large groups by not giving a single fuck about them, they will not identify with your values and your candidate and vote for someone else.
I’ll bring up the “Black Lives Matter” movement. I’m a huge cynic about police militarization and the unchecked power they have to just shoot and kill. I know that some are justified and I know that “I’m not there in the trenches” but I don’t give police a free pass, and am deeply suspicious about their motives and actions. But when I see a rally for “Black Lives Matter” I don’t readily identify with it, because I’m not included. It takes more for me to feel part of the movement, and I’m less likely to join in. Its human nature, its normal behavior to not have motivation to support ideas you don’t feel a part of.
My advice to the Democrats is to understand that, and use it to your advantage.
Or gun rights. Maybe just accept that one as a loss, y’know? Just run a candidate of the huntin’-and-fishin’ type – has a big fine gun collection, and a bunch of medals from his Army days – and have him deliver the same message Hillary Clinton did, only while championing the right to keep and bear arms with the exact same amount of zeal that he dedicates to talking about gay rights. Or something.
That may be true, but Joe Six Pack hears labels like “Basket of Deplorables,” “Racists,” “Fascists,” and so forth and feels personally attacked. Clinton’s favorable policies weren’t apparent to the common man, especially in light of her ignoring her own numerous security breaches and her longtime contempt for police and authority. All the Trump supporters saw was the condescending left calling them stupid. Their own pride mattered more than facts. Democrats need to understand that if they want to win any more elections. Their current ideology isn’t working so good.
“Unhinged from reality?” What’s the reality? The reality is Trump won. The reality is if we don’t want Trump to win again, we have to figure out how to get his supporters to vote otherwise without calling them names such as “raving lunatics.” The reality is they become alienated and incensed and will fight back, no matter how right you think you are.
Another option that should not be overlooked is to convince Democrats to actually come out and vote.
I agree with this analysis for this election. You are wrong about future elections. Joe Six Pack is going to stay home after this one. The jobs are still disappearing. Trump doesn’t have the talent to stop it. Their fragile pride doesn’t mean shit in the long run.
Unemployment rate tumbles to 4.6%, lowest since August 2007
His policies are working already!!
Wall of text?
Anyway, I’m not saying “you have to tolerate intolerance”. I’m saying that it is hypocritical to say “I’m not going to tolerate you because I believe you to be intolerant”.
When you believe someone else’s ideas are so repugnant and vile that you refuse to even allow them in the conversation, you are being bigoted, plain and simple. By silencing their voice, disenfranchising them, you do not even allow for the possibility that your assumptions of their beliefs may not be 100% correct. This makes you appear to be sanctimonious and drives you away from free-thinkers. You have to be pretty smug about your own moral high ground not to not see the irony there.
Did you see the articles recently showing how the number of republicans who think the economy is going well suddenly spiked over the days after election day?
Granted, there’s a similar (albeit far lesser) effect among the democrats, but holy shit.
I don’t know if this is a joke, but I think it could work.
I would think the best way to piss off Trump voters is to take away their mortgage interest deduction.
Bullshit. Democrats have bent over backwards to help working class white people, for decades, but these ignorant pig-fuckers would rather listen to Republican lies than actually look at who’s trying to help them. They want Trump? Fine. Let’s have Trump. Let him repeal the ACA. I get health insurance through my work. Let him gut the EPA. I live in California. We’ve got tighter environmental controls than the Feds. Elections have consequences, and this time, that includes soaring cancer rates and no health care. We don’t have to convince these people of any thing. We can just let their own candidate’s policies kill them off.
And that is fucking stupid. Being tolerant inherently means being intolerant of intolerance. If I tolerate the intolerant, then I allow them to be intolerant, and then the very thing I want to stop continues happening.
There is a case study of this. Gamers. We decided to become all inclusive, and, in doing so, we let in the sexists. Even though we were trying to be inclusive, we created a place where women didn’t want to be, because they would have to deal with these people.
When we started taking that shit seriously, and started kicking people out for this shit–and you can’t get more intolerant than that–women started to feel more welcome and we became more inclusive–more tolerant.
The idea that we have to tolerate the intolerant is just wrong. What we have to do is try to find the decent people who got lumped in with the horrible people. The people who voted based on stupid promises about getting their jobs back. The people who just couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Clinton. The people who read the fake news and learned the wrong thing. And, yes, the progressives and moderates who voted third party.
And we have to continue the outreach of convincing the intolerant to stop being so intolerant. That doesn’t mean tolerating them. It means educating them, and doing so in a way that doesn’t push them away.
Not tolerating the fucking intolerant racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic or otherwise human garbage.
