I’ve heard conflicting things about the 80 gig versions of the WD caviar special edition drive.
I’ve read that at first, WD took old 80 gig drive, slapped 8 megs of cache onto them, and sold them as special edition drives, but then they stopped that and started making 2-platter drives (40 gig each) with the special firmware and such that comes with the bigger (100 and 120) special edition drives.
First, is this true?
Second, if it is, what’s the likeliness that if I buy a new OEM drive that it’ll be the former (3 platters at 27 gig) rather than the newer (2 platters at 40 gig) version?
The reports I saw MAY indicate that it was refering to the regular 80 gig WD drives, not the special editions - that is, went from 3 platters to 2.
I know it’s a rather specialized question, but I want to buy one of these drives and I don’t want to get stuck with an old drive with 8 megs of cache slapped on.
