Details here. The site loads slow for me so a summary with pictures on AICN here.
I get why they eventually said no. It would have been a huge risk. But in 1992, TNG was at the height of popularity, I think it may have actually worked. Oh well, dare to dream.
They didn’t propose it as hotel/casino/convention center. Why? I would want to stay there. Also I hated the Noah’s ark ramp entrance. You need a few dozen glass elevators going up the saucer section so you can beam up. Then you have the experience, the restaurants and everything else that goes with the casino.
Some kind of decorative supports could probably be managed like making it look like it was in a giant drydock or some kind of landing struts a la Voyager (yes totally not canon)
I remember visiting the Star Trek: The Experience when it was at the Hilton. Actually a lot of fun as far as theme attractions go. (But Hoover Dam was more impressive.)
I was at a trade show at the Hilton a few years ago and spent my every non-sleeping, non-working moment at Quark’s Bar.
After a few days, the actors/servers knew I was a Trekker and allowed me to be a part of the experience.
Given how demanding my role was at the trade show, the place was a true benison.
For a few days, I was able to hang out in ‘Star Trek Land’, even if I didn’t get to be onboard a ship.
You know what would be fun would be to remodel the interior of the Stratosphere tower in a Star Trek theme. You have all the curved exterior walls to work with. Make the elevators look like turbolifts, have a Ten Forward lounge, etc.
From the article, the point was to create a draw to the downtown area away from the mega casinos on the strip to draw traffic to the casinos and hotels in the downtown area. Making the Enterprise a casino/hotel would compete with them more.
They discuss that they evaluated that and were looking at adding some support scaffolding to resemble some sort of drydock feature. There are apparently pictures somewhere.
Last year when I went to Vegas, I decided to get off the strip and chose the Hilton to visit. I remember getting off the monorail, walking into the building, and right into the middle of a casino that was “dead.” No lights, no usual casino sounds, rows and rows of slot machines not turned on. As I got further in, I started seeing Star Trek Themed decorations strewn around and put two and two together: They were remodeling the old Star Trek place. I had never seen it when it was up and running, and all that “dead” Trek-like gear, no sounds and very few people walking through made it creepy as hell. I’m not sure we were supposed to be there, but there weren’t any signs telling us we couldn’t. Plus, it was the closest entrance to the monorail, so I guess they couldn’t close it off while they were changing things. I wish I had taken pictures, but I didn’t think about it until I had already left.
