Spice Weasel - Even though they didn’t show up, I wouldn’t count these parents out. Being homeless can mean a lot of things are out of your control. Their transportation may have failed, or they may just not be ready yet. My hope for you is that everything turns out for the best.

Two main factors. The kids are African American and there are many white families who are not open to trans-racial adoption. The other factor is the fact that there are two children who must be adopted together, and 18 months is fairly old into a child’s life for couples who are predominantly looking into domestic infant adoption (my agency tends to primarily handle domestic infant adoption… this is an unusual case.) Even my husband, who is a child psychologist, is somewhat freaked about the additional challenges of adopting an 18-month-old (sometimes I think he knows too much for his own good.)

You’ll definitely be hearing an update on Thursday.

The New Nephew came home at exactly 24 months old and, thanks in great part to a lovely foster (grand)mother, the transition has been so smooth it’s unbelievable. It helps that the parents already had an idea what kids are like (both were experienced uncles).

He already had the basic mental structures of language but didn’t quite talk, just a few loose words. Now he’s having a lot of fun figuring out that not only can you combine “big” and “button” to mean “big button”, you can also use verbs!

For those who have PMed me, I appreciate it, and I will respond later, I’m just emotionally exhausted right now.

On the bright side, the nursery (and our whole house) is getting painted next week. My FIL helped me pick out the colors today. Blue for the ocean themed nursery, and green for (hopefully, when a second child comes) a dinosaur themed kids’ room. These are deliberately gender neutral themes! For now, the second bedroom is just the office.

And Tuesday we’re getting furniture and maybe setting up a registry well in advance of our match/baby shower. Because we have been pestered to do a baby shower but I’d rather wait until we match. But in the event the placement is something crazy and last minute, we’ll already be registered.
