We are now a menagerie!

Saturday morning. I got up, poured myself a cup of coffee. Genghis Wife was reading an article about cats. It seems that, if you have two cats, you shouldn’t have two males. A male and a female, great; two females, okay; two males, trouble.

All very interesting, in a Saturday-morning sort of way. Until Genghis Wife looked up at me and said “I want another.”

After confirming that she wasn’t referring to another kid, I had a few questions, like: why? Answer - I just do. And, if we got two, would you then want to go for three? Answer - no; I just want another kitty. And finally, how long have you been thinking about this? Answer - since we got Thor (August, 2004, our now-eight-month-old male tabby).

There are a lot of good reasons to have two cats rather than one, and I let Genghis Wife run them by me, but really she had me at"I want another kitty." Genghis Wife was a little surprised by how easily I rolled, but thirty minutes later we were at our favorite animal hospital, interviewing prospective kitties. We had a name picked out before we met the candidates: Stella.

So now we are officially a menagerie. Thor is having adjustment “issues”, but we’re assured he’ll come around. . . if not, it won’t be too long before she’s his size, and then it won’t matter what he thinks. So there.

Thor and Stella? Congrats on the new kitty. Cats are like potato chips, you can’t have just one. I think Thor is still young enough that he will realize he now has someone to play with and turn around pretty soon.

I think I disagree with that article though, my male cats always get along better together than the females. My oldest male thinks he’s everyone’s mommy and he learned this from a previous male cat that babied him. The boys play together much better, and there’s only the rare occasional macho grandstanding.

I’m curious as to what, exactly, is supposed to go wrong if one has 2 male cats? Presumably, being a responsible pet owner, you’d have both neutered at the appropriate time anyway. I had 2 male cats for a several years, and then we acquired another one, a foundling. None of them especially liked to cuddle up with each other, but they didn’t have territorial disputes or anything like that.

Congrats on the new baby. I’ve been really wanting one lately, too.

I have to say I also disagree that it’s a bad idea to have two male cats. I have two male cats. In fact, I used to have three. So far our house is still standing. Though I will admit I haven’t seen it since about 1:00 this afternoon, so that very well could have changed by now. As was already said here, as long as they’re both neutered, it shouldn’t be a problem.

So now, about this Stella. Love the name. Need to see pictures!

Congrats on the new cat but…

two cats is a menagerie?

My home has…

2 dogs (Jasmine - Beagle, Mickey - Cocker Spaniel)
1 cat (Brat - Domestic Shorthair)
2 fish (no names - Damsels)
1 bird (Mac - cockateil)
3 degus (Pompey, Antigone and Octavia)
1 iguana (Ralph)
1 hamster (George)

I think there’s a couple of humans poking around too, but I don’t pay much attention to those.

I’m not sure if this is going to work, but here are two pictures of Stella as we brought her home, and one of Thor, the first time he laid eyes on her (we call it the “what fresh hell is this?” picture. Try here.

Great Og, now I really want a kitten! Thanks for the pix!
