Well, my spring break went just as planned. Starting last Friday, nothing but drinking, sleeping, eating, sportsbars, and watching basketball. I successfully managed to limit the time that I heard or saw anything about the war to about 10 total minutes (they had little updates during halftime of the games, but thankfully the sound was off at the bars so nothing would spoil my nice vacation from reality.) So I happen to catch some talk radio driving home yesterday, and I expected to hear that the war was about over…
…and I was wrong.
So, I see we’re parked outside of Baghdad, that’s nice. As for everything else… Shock and awe? Nope. Demoralized Iraqi soldiers surrendering by the thousands? Nope. Iraqi citizens celebrating our arrival as “liberators”? Nope.
So what do we have? A bunch of Iraqis running around in occupied territory like conquered Russian peasantry attacking our supply lines? Yep, got that. Marines down to one meal a day due to supply chain problems? Yep, got that. Reporters telegraphing troop retreats to fix said problem, on Fox News of all places?? Yep, there it is.
The United States is totally fucked. I see only a few ways this ends:
A) US pulls out before toppling Hussein. If he doesn’t have WMDs now, he sure as hell will start making them then and giving them to whoever the hell he wants, since he’d know he’s basically untouchable.
B) We keep going as we are, having tiny little skirmishes where we send a couple helicopters after a few of their tanks. Six months later, hippie protesters’ use of the “V”-word will seem more accurate as the US casualties mount.
C) We have a seige and starve 'em out. Europeans whine about civilian starvations (casualties), everyone hates us even more, we’re diplomatically fucked in perpetuity.
D) We bomb the ever-loving fuck out of Baghdad, with no regard for civilian casualties and win the whole damn thing in 3 days. Same consequences as above, plus the elimination of any possibility of peaceful “nation-building”, plus increased retaliation from fringe Islam groups.
I opposed the war, but when the war starts that isn’t really the question any more, since it’s not like we can just pull out (see option A above.) Like McCain said when another war-happy president launched his attacks on Kosovo, I may not want us to be there but when you’re in it, you’re there to win it. If it’s a choice between tens of thousands of US casualties in a war that goes on for years or bombing some Iraqi civilians, then I say bomb the fuck out of them. But why the hell did we have to end up in this situation in the first place? Were our top military strategists so stupid they thought the Iraqi people would just jump up and cheer for their conquerers and lead us into Baghdad, waltzing in like Cortez into Tenochtitlan? What a bunch of braindead fucking morons.
These people have fucked the country’s future no matter how this ends up. If this was the best plan they could come up with, then I wouldn’t trust these guys to play a game of Starcraft against a 5 year old Korean girl at a cybercafe.
We are so fucking screwed.
