Do You Support The War In Iraq?

Simple question. Do you or don’t you? And tell us why or why not.

I’ve been seeing alot of prevaricating lately, people afraid to come right out and say why or why not.

So, let’s hear it. Out in the clear.

Myself, I think Bush is a liar, and 3,600 US troops have died in vain.

In complete and total vain.

What do you say?

Nope.
No reason was ever offered sufficient to warrant invading a sovereign country, and the reasons that were offered at the time have since been proven weaker than they appeared at the time.
The lives of our servicemen and countless Iraqis, billions of dollars future generations will have to repay, and our nation’s standing in the international community have been utterly wasted.
The ONLY possible gain I can see is for the industries and individuals who have benefitted economically.

No, opposed before it began.

No. I was appalled before it started, and I’m even more appalled now. Appalled and very depressed at the waste and destruction.

Not at all. Like everyone else, there was absolutely no reason to enter in the first place and we’ve accomplished one lone thing: making the US look abysmally bad in the eyes of the world.

More selfishly though, I don’t like seeing some of my closest friends being shipped off to a miserable, lonely place where their lives are on the line every single day for no good reason. I hate seeing my friend raise her child alone because her husband was a casualty of an unjust, unethical, and downright wrong war.

More so, I hate that this particular action isn’t just making the US look bad, but it’s making the soldiers who work so hard at their jobs look bad.

I’m sure someone will be along to defend this eventually, but both Pepper Mill and I were screaming “No!” from the moment Bush statrtede mobilizing in the Gulf. It was abundantly cear that he was going to war no matter what, and it seemed wholly irrelevant. It was particularly abhorrent that we were initiating a war against a nation that – however objectionable the government of it may have been – posed no threat and had made no threatening gestures to the United States, or to anyone else.

I too was against it from the very start, for the same kind of reasons posted so far, and in particular from fear of the repercussions we’re now experiencing.

If Bush had wanted to dissolve international sympathy for the US after 9/11, he couldn’t have done better than to use the legacy of that event as an excuse for actions like the invasion of Iraq. Afghanistan I could understand, and supported at the time, but Iraq?

I’ve been angry about this since the invasion, and it’s wearing me out.

No. Because it’s fucking stupid and evil.

Not on this board, I suspect.

You’re going to get a mighty chorus of “No”, with a scattered few that disagree. I daresay even a substantial portion of the conservatives on this board ( variously defined ) no longer support it if they ever did.

When this sort of poll was first put out a few years back ( I’m sure someone will have a link or three to previous efforts ), there were a fair number ( if still a minority ) of supporters. I’d say at least a solid majority of those folks are either no longer members or have changed their mind.

Not to discourage you, you understand. Always handy to get a gauge on the populace of a new hangout. Just noting this has been done multiple times here, so you may not get as many responses. Or then again, you might. I dunno :).

For the record I was opposed from the start and would have been even if every word Bush et al had said on the subject had been God’s honest truth. I just didn’t think it was likely to be successful. Still don’t.

For what it’s worth, yes, I do. I believe it was necessary. I’m tired of the screeching and the attention span of the American people, accustomed to instant gratification, who can’t figure out why we’re not out of there yet. We’re not fighting a traditional enemy, but it’s worth it in the long term. And I’m disgusted with those of you who think the soldiers who died died in vain.

No, I can’t be bothered to debate you people on this subject. It’s a waste of bandwidth and a strain on the hamsters. So, carry on and enjoy. I won’t be back. Call me the lone voice in the wilderness.

How so, Miss Prophecy?

No. Not from the start. And I absolutely agree with the “attention span” problem as in - What the fuck ever happened to Afghanistan? We did a little, helped a few women, then abruptly switched tactics and all those women went back to living in the filth and squalor they were before. When I think about it I can’t even think clearly…we left the semi-worthwhile battle and forgot Osama and went off to fight Daddy’s war. And yes, we destroyed our reputation in the world.

ETA: One more thing. I believe we are shooting ourselves in the foot. I believe all this "war’ is doing is spawning a whole new batch of terrorists, to come back and haunt us in a few years.

Tens or hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead? No.

Huh? There’s still quite a NATO contingency in Afghanistan fighting the same kind of war that’s happening in Iraq. In fact 6 canadians were killed just yesterday by a roadside bomb.

No, and I never did. It’s an stupid, evil war in an stupid, evil cause perpetrated by stupid, evil people. And yes, I include the troops that I’m supposed to idolize. And the people who supported the war, and who voted Bush and his fellow war supporters back in. They are all scum and fools.

The war in Iraq has nothing to do with the mythical war on terrorism and never did, and it’s making terrorism stronger not weaker.

I do agree that the American soldiers didn’t die in vain; at the very least, they are a down payment on the payback the Iraqis owe us. Every American soldier who dies in Iraq is a victory for both the Iraqis and humanity in general. The real great evil here is not terrorism; it’s us. The body counts alone show that.

This is what you can expect from people who are blind and are rabid in their blindness. Do you really think you will get a reply from someone like ivylass??

This was GD material from the get-go. Let’s bump it over there.

Moved.

I’ve seen you hold these particular opinions before, but I have to ask: would you say this to the face of a war widow? Would you tell her the same thing that the Phelps klan told her- that her husband (and children’s father) deserved to die? What about the children? Would you tell them their father’s death (which was surely horrible, people there tend to get blown to bits) was ultimately scoring one for humanity? 'm genuinely curious.

Nope, not in the least. Blair dragged the U.K. into that mess to keep friendly with Bush.

You didn’t ask me but

I would feel sorry that he probably killed or contributed to the death of one or more Iraqis (and not soldiers) before he died. So I wouldn’t consider him automatically honorable, but no, I wouldn’t further the hurt by saying this to a war widow or kids.
