Woohoo! Let’s try out this editing function…
blabla…
I just started to see some of these “Last edited by” messages and I thought people were just being smartasses - putting in {sub} tags to make it look like editing took place. Then I realized the horrible truth! Then I saw an edit button at the bottom of my own post!!
Do I dare press that button and forever begin to second guess myself?! Do I dare try to revise my manner and become the sole of wit that I dream myself to be?! Though on first thought, lack of a button has never stopped me before.
Something wicked this way comes…
No good deed goes unpunished
No good shall come of it. I have watched here long enough to know that. - Your advice is well-intended, but I will disregard it.
very interesting
And very cool.
Wha?
Oh.
I just noticed that there is actually a way to distinguish. There’s a thin white line, like a table break, between the post proper and the “edited by…” line. So far as I know, there’s no way for a poster to generate one of those in a post, so if you see that, it has to be a genuine edit.
Did not!

above the line
below the line
Also on a reply, the edit & edit reason are not included. So a fake edit is easy to distinguish.
Despite Squink’s proof otherwise.
Jim
A white line makes a pretty good fake.
Not sure why anyone’d want to do that though.
The line’s very hard to see on my monitor. I would never have noticed it.
There’s also a faint line just between the poster info and the beginning of the message text.
As for faking it, the faked lines in this thread can be selected with the cursor. The real line can’t.

Yes it can.
I’m hard pressed to imagine why someone would want to pretend they’d edited their own post, when they hadn’t… but then, we can always rely on someone to find some way to annoy others, I guess.
That’s the text below the line, not the line itself.
And Dex, I can’t see why someone would want to pretend e had edited es own post, but I can see why someone might want to pretend someone else had.
Just noticed that if you specify a post topic, there’s a faint white line before and after it.

Ever bring in a new box or paper bag and watch all the critters play in it for hours?
Ah! You’re another cat person!
One of us… one of us… one of us…
Critters?
Oooh, big pretty edit button. Exciting.
