Last year in November we learned our 8 year old Labrador “Ella” had a brain tumour. We gave her medication which helped reduce the symptoms (staggering gait mostly) for a while, but we could see that it was only holding back the inevitable end. The vet had been frank about her prognosis so we were prepared when she started staring into the sky. It was time for her to leave us. Sunday, 10 January, we had a party to say goodbye and had friends and family come to celebrate her life and on Monday morning the vet came to euthanize her. It was a very sad day for us, losing our beautiful girl.
We are still in the stages of grieving for her, with tears coming when seeing photos of her, playing with our other dog Nina at the beach and in the back yard, and even just remembering her and the way she was.
Our memories haven’t stopped us getting another dog though. This weekend we have adopted our new puppy from the SPCA, giving her a family to live with and become part of. I hope she gives us as much pleasure as Ella did, but in her own way.
