We just got a 125G tank and some Mpimbwe blues

WARNING! Geeky fish-related post to follow:

Mr. skeptic and I just bought a 125 gallon Oceanic aquarium with stand and canopy from a friend of a friend for $200. It had never been used. For those of you who don’t keep fish, just know that that’s a really good deal.

Also, we have obtained four (two male, two female) Cyphotilapia frontosas, also known as Mpimbwe (pronounced “/i/m-p/i/mb-way”) blues. They are F0 (wild) and proven breeders. For reference, our males are about seven inches long, and the females about five inches long. They will probably live for 20 more years and grow much larger.

These are our first cichlids, except for some little kribs that we have had for a while.

It looks so cool in our living room.

That’s pretty good sized tank; a lot bigger than anything I had when I was keeping fish. I’ve had a whole lot of the smaller cichlids from Lake Tanganyika & Lake Malawai over the years though. I even had a breeding group of N. Brichardi for a time in a community tank. That was kinda interesting. I had, I think, six of the brichardis (number of males and females was unknown) and the group spawned several times, keeping care of the fry as a group.

Cichlids were far and away my favorite group of tropical fishes. Endless variety with the color morphs among a single species even.
