Damn! When I saw this thread again I was hoping that the update was that someone found a working version of classic maps as I still think the new one sucks.
Anyone know of a good maps program (meaning not the big G or MapQuest)?

Weirdness. My wife and I both have Google Maps satellite view open on our respective computers. The picture she’s looking at was taken before Superstorm Sandy dropped the neighbours’ willow tree on my car at the end of Oct 2012. The picture I’m looking at appears to have been taken in the early spring of 2014 - it shows not only my new car, but also the one that she bought in Jul 2013.

I really like the terrain feature on the ClassyGMap.
Argh, what a timely thread. I tried asking about the new maps here but got no responses. In short, when searching nearby in the new craps.google.com, the original marker seems to disappear—and the map view zooms in and out to accommodate results, meaning I often lose track of where the marker was. Not a big deal in general searches, but what a giant pain in the ass in areas I’m not familiar with. Is this result or that result closer to the hotel? Which is on the same road? GRRRRRRR!!!
How can I get the original place marker to stay on the map when I search nearby?!
(Answering a question posted above–the people who like the new maps are the same people who think the Office Ribbon was a great idea.)
Is it just me or street view doesn’t work?
Because that was the main reason for me to not use Google’s “improved” maps, it’s all but useless to move between street view and the map.
The ClassyG version streetview works for me, mostly. the only time it’s a problem is when I try to place the streetview icon on a map that doesn’t have streetview available on it. Then I have to exit and start over, rather than just place the icon back.
Otherwise, no difficulties with streetview for me.

All I get is the controls on the left, with no map whatsoever and no place to type in an address to map.
Curious, it works fine for me when I click that link.
