Seem MPSIMS is where we talk about news. Might it not be worth having a separate sub?
On some lesser part of the Internet such a sub has the amusing rule of closing news threads after 48 hours. This keeps the sub on the topic of current events and limits endless political discussions.
I think things, in this respect, are fine. All you’re asking for is a bunch of unnecessary extra work for the moderators.
I like the SDMB ethos of fighting ignorance as distinct from spreading shit as fast as possible.
I’m going with this combined with my personal inability to decide just what is breaking news. A major California earthquake this morning sure - but if it’s a .5 Richter? The President saying something insulting about someone could be - but the mayor of New Castle PA saying the same sort of thing? Our local television news has 14 “breaking” stories every day; about once every two or three days one actually has some legs. And shared across a national audience lower that to maybe one a month. Naaah - most breaking news is at best worthy of MPSIMS; maybe once a week or so worth another forum. But its a good general place to start.
