We Need a "Cecil Prize" to Compete Against the Nobels and IgNobels

There’s been a lot of talk in the local media about Al Gore getting the Nobel Peace Prize due to his work in educating people about global warming, but this strikes me as stretching the definition of what the Peace Prize should be about a bit far. Also, no one’s handing out awards to folks like Buzz Aldrin and Jon Lovitz for beating the snot out of jerks who so richly deserve it (Yes, violence is wrong, but come on, BS and Dick have had it coming to them for years, now.), and I’m sure that there’s other areas which don’t have awards handed out that should. It would also have the benefit of creating publicity for The Reader and the SDMB.

I realize that this idea probably comes up every year around this time, but I thought I’d throw it out there for discussion.

Yeah, there’d be different categories, but I don’t necessarily think that they should follow exactly the Nobel/IgNobel categories. For example, Buzz would qualify for the Physical Punctuation in the Fight Against Ignorance. (I’m sure that somebody could come up with a better name for the award.) The nominations would come from paid members of the board, with voting done on who get’s the award by SDSAB members. Also, if there really wasn’t a good nominee for a particular category, the award simply wouldn’t be given out (with an admonishment for society to get cracking on the matter).

it is a disgrace that buzz aldrin needs to be punching people at his age. wtf wasn’t there a single patriot around to punch that guy?

Some time ago I fiddled with the idea of knocking together a few trophies (some picture with a plaque) to give to remarkable posts on the dope. Unfortunately I lost the notebook where I wrote down the categories and I´ve been too busy to start again.

I think ‘Physical Punctuation’ is just great.
I think the codes of behaviour taught to kids in schools should be rewritten to state ‘Violence is [del]never[/del] only occasionally the answer’, with a footnote mentioning Buzz.

Well, I have this year’s nominee for the award!

Fear not, fellow Americans! In these dark days of war, pestilence and Paris Hilton, a new hero has arisen. She is none other than 75-year-old Mona “The Hammer” Shaw, who took the aforementioned implement to her local Comcast office in Manassas to settle a score, and boy, did she!

This was after the company had scheduled installation of its much ballyhooed “Triple Play” service, which combines phone, cable and Internet services, in Shaw’s brick home in nearby Bristow. But Shaw said they failed to show up on the appointed day, Monday, Aug. 13. They came two days later but left with the job half done. On Friday morning, they cut off all service.

The insulting idea that, as Shaw puts it, “they thought just because we’re old enough to get Social Security that we lack both brains and backbone.”

So, after stewing over it all weekend, on the following Monday, she went downstairs, got Don’s claw hammer and said: “C’mon, honey, we’re going to Comcast.”

Did you try to stop her, Mr. Shaw?

“Oh no, no,” he says.

Hammer time: Shaw storms in the company’s office. BAM! She whacks the keyboard of the customer service rep. BAM! Down goes the monitor. BAM! She totals the telephone. People scatter, scream, cops show up and what does she do? POW! A parting shot to the phone!

“They cuffed me right then,” she says.

Her take on Comcast: “What a bunch of sub-moronic imbeciles.”

Yes, there IS a photo of Mrs. Shaw proudly holding the hammer.
