Apparently, homosexuality is endlessly fascinating to Dopers. As I sit here and type this, I can see (in my other browser window) five active threads in the Pit on gays, gay marriage, gay issues, et. al. And they aren’t spread out; no they’re all bunched towards the top of the first page, which means they’re high on SOMEBODY’S mind.
Perhaps the SDMB can establish a Gay Forum, where we can just go and yammer on endlessly about those who have sex with others of the same gender to their hearts content. As for me, I’m pretty damn sick of it. I really don’t care if a guy likes a dick in his ass, or a woman likes muff-diving. But I don’t care to have the issue constantly, CONSTANTLY rehashed, usually to some variation of “These bigots said etc etc etc!!”
I have no doubt some gays could marry and make it work. I’m sure someday a queen will walk on the Moon, or become President, or even hold a conversation with my mother. But I Just. Don’t. Care.
Here’s an idea, you brainless fungus. Don’t read the fucking threads. I know one of my favorite pasttimes is to find things I dislike, actively pursue discussion of them, and then whine about them.
Perhaps we can establish a “Doesn’t Catch on Too Fucking Quickly” forum for jackasses who’ve been here for years but haven’t realized that they DON’T HAVE TO READ EVERY FUCKING THREAD IN EVERY FUCKING FORUM IF THEY DON’T WANT TO.
If you don’t care, then DON’T READ THEM. The presence of a couple of square inches of lighted phosphors on your CRT about gays shouldn’t be of your concern. They’re easily scrolled off, or simply ignored.

Prejudice is news, every time. In some cases, it’s a front-page story, replete with quotes and fancy charts and everything. Sometimes, like when some sawed-off, shit-for-brains caveman shoots off at the mouth and reveals his/her own ugly bigotry, it’s more suitable the puzzle section. Right under that Bridge column I never understand. Like a Jumble, for the kids- fill in the clues, then guess how stupid the OP is.

Hmm. You know, I think Lizard’s got a point. There are a lot of gay threads. A lot. Because there are so many, they tend to fade into the background as white noise to many of the dopers who would otherwise have something interesting to say.
It’s similar to threads about SUVs. When I read a thread title with “SUV” in it, I think to myself “oh, that again”, and very likely don’t even bother with it. There may be an interesting discussion on the US rejection of the Kyoto agreement lurking in there, but I wouldn’t know. I’ve grown so sick of mundane SUV threads that I wouldn’t know when a truly interesting one comes along.
Gay issues are important, but I think all the chatter hinders the debate. Not only do some people become jaded and no longer interested in the subject, but spreading a similar topic over five threads is going to water down the debate.

If you wanted to debate the use of the word “prejudice” and the possibility of overuse diluting its meaning, you would’ve gone to GD. But you didn’t. Because its big news right now. A lot is going on, baby steps are turning into longer and longer strides. We’re excited about moving forward so we start a thread to celebrate. We’re angry at being pushed back so we start a thread to vent our anger.
I disagree for a number of reasons.
#1 - This isn’t Great Debates, this is the Pit.
#2 - If some people lose interest in the subject, they can drop out of the discussion and stop opening the threads. They’re usually clearly labeled. No skin off the noses of those of us that remain interested.
#3 - Every single one of those threads is about a different issue or incedent. Each one needs its own thread to keep the discussion on topic. You can’t roll them all up into one big ‘gay issues’ thread.
How do you propose we discuss all these things in one thread? Or are you suggesting that we not discuss them all - just pick one or two that fit with your preference? Which ones shall we be allowed to discuss, then?
Oh, and Lizard, you’ll be the second person I’ve told this on the boards in the past 24 hours. Call your doctor. You need to get your occulorectitis trimmed back. (That’s the string between your asshole and your eyeballs. Its getting kinda tight.)
Oh Hell no. I’m just saying that the abundance of discussions about gay issues has caused me to overlook a lot of these threads because they have become white noise to me. I’m not calling for censorship at all, just pondering the fact that though I am deeply concerned that my Uncle’s partner of 25 some odd years doesn’t have next of kin status, I don’t feel like discussing gay marriage on the boards anymore because it is always being discussed. I mean always. I have become jaded by the cacophony and the endless rehashing of similar themes.
Like most of you, I’m of the if you don’t like it, don’t read it school of thought. But I do sympathize with the “can’t we talk about something else - at least occasionally” attitude.
My main issue with the OP is that it is too narrow. The Monkey with a Gun pointed out my issue sort of – it is hard for a reader to not think you are anti-homosexuality because you “conveniently” picked this thread topic.
What I mean is, there are 5 different threads about American-Iraqi torture/beheading on the first page alone in the Pit, but you didn’t pick those. However – the argument kind of deflates a bit when you realize gays are a long-debated topic, whereas most topics are short-term. But why did you pick gays over SUVs, or bad parenting, or computer issues (viruses/spam)? – other long-term topics in the Pit all on the first page.
I see your point, though. It is just a matter of keeping the subtopics different to keep up “interest”, as already mentioned. But I have a knee-jerk reaction to you picking such a volatile subject, ya know? Especially when you use a lot of "I"s, and no community language. You “not caring” doesn’t automactically implement change – its when the whole doesn’t care that change begins. Perhaps you worded it wrong… Looking at the threads started by you, a good portion of the last few months are about love, both negative and positive. I’m sure there’s someone out there on the boards that could really care less about having a SO right now. But no one protests your threads. So why protest others?
