We only went to PetCo for rabbit food...

Whew! Good news!

Yay for Tiger! Very handsome kitty.

Talked to the vet today and FVS is exactly what he has. Another vet visit has been scheduled for Wednesday, at which he’ll get different medication.

Tiger is doing much better! The head tilt still returns at times and the FVS may have left him deaf in one ear but he’s very active and has been ambushing Chippie. Right now he’s playing with a stuffed fish tied to a plastic rod.

While he was confined to a bedroom for a week to let his symptoms subside, Tiger lost interest in being on me. He no longer takes up residence on my shoulders while I’m working. On the plus side, I’m no longer a human kitty climber.

That rabbit’s dynamite!

Seriously cute, thanks for sharing

Tiger’s been having trouble breathing. Took him to the vet yesterday and x-rays show a bunch of fluid in both lungs. No idea as to the cause or if it’s even treatable. Waiting for test results.

Might need to put him down.

Damn.

I’m so sorry for your situation. I lost a 6 mo kitten last year to a fatal and incurable condition and it was crushing. Whatever you decide, know that your kitty was lucky to have your love and care in his life.

Thanks.

He does seem to be breathing better since the vet drained out the fluid. One hopes that it won’t return.

Vet just called. Tiger apparently has Feline Infectious Peritonitis, which is somewhat treatable but incurable and eventually fatal.

We’re going to put him on some medication starting tonight. Still looking at putting him down, when depends on how well he responds to the meds.

I don’t need to go look for kittens, people helpfully dump them at the farm. On a good day we can catch them before htey either starve, freeze or get turned into something elses dinner.

I had a kitten die of FIP. I’m so sorry, Skywatcher.

I’m sorry, Lute.

StG

My kitten also died of FIP - the fast-acting wet form. A terrible disease about which very little is understood.

If it would be comforting to you, a researcher named Niels Pedersen at UC Davis Center for Companion Animal Health is gathering genetic material to study the genetic basis of the disease. You can send them cheek swabs through the regular mail, and there are instruction on the website. Www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ccah – follow “research” tab.

Again, I am so sorry for your diagnosis and the difficult decision you now face. I hope your vet has not lead you to believe there is any long term hope through treatment. There is no known effective treatment for FIP.

I’m sad for you, but at least you were able to give Tiger a good life and will give him a kind and gentle death. FIP just totally sucks.

Ah, geez. :frowning:

My condolences. It’s never easy.

<wanders off to hug her kitties, whether they like it or not>

The vet isn’t entirely sure it is FIP. We’re taking a wait & see approach if the meds keep his lungs clear.

Less than $40 a month, indefintely, is doable and preferable to no kitty.

i hope he has many more good days than bad.

I hope it’s not, but when free fluid shows up in cats for no reason FIP is the most common factor. I’ve seen more cases of this damn disease than I care to think about, just last night seeing the latest case in a 6 month old, he had been in his adoptive home for 4 months. Unfortunately, he had already been what we call ADR (seriously, ain’t doin’ right, it’s a thing) for about 3 weeks and by last night hadn’t eaten for 3 days and was showing signs of hepatic lipidosis on top of the free fluid in his abdomen. It was already time to let him go. It sucked so bad, and I felt so bad for the adopters to have to learn about this horrible disease and let their kitten go all within an hour.

I’ve seen the fluid accumulate in the abdomen most commonly, but it can also show up in the chest - either in the pleural cavity or even the pericardial sac.

So I hope against all hope that it’s something else Skywatcher. I hope the medication does some good stuff for your kitty. Any mention of a cardiac workup?

Tiger only has fluid in his lungs, and that was drained during the last vet visit.

We’ll run that by the vet next time we talk to her.

Keeping good thoughts for Tiger.
