We drove by the scene of a bank robbery in our neighborhood minutes after it happened. There were 12 police cars blocking the street and seemingly dozens on foot, some with big scary guns at the ready.
They were climbing over fences, onto roofs and into businesses.
We thought it would be the top story on the 5:00 news, but there was a bigger bank robbery with a bomb threat downtown, so our little excitement got an also ran.
A couple of years ago I saw a man get shot in front of a 7-11 in Toronto. My friends and I called 911, though it seems others on the street were doing the same, and abruptly cancelled our plans to walk past that intersection on our way to our intended restaurant. We took a car instead. The shooter ran away, and the victim didn’t seem seriously injured; police and ambulance were there very quickly. It appeared to have been gang-related, though I admit that that opinion is based on gut feeling, knowing the neighbourhood in question, and the fact that in the tiny news blurb the next day the victim wasn’t being very co-operative with the police.
Zippo. But I’ve either witnessed or walked by minutes after a crime twice in my area now. A few years back some dudes got into an altercation at the mall – midday, mind you – and one slashed the other across the face with a blade of some sort. It was clearly pretty deep and long by the amount of blood on the floor. I didn’t see the slashing but I saw the culprits running away – they were too far for identification when I did though.
Another time about two years ago I got off the bus and was walking home through the parking lot of the mall (I live right behind it) and had learned there was a shooting just minutes before I was there; cops were driving around. Apparently it was a pretty small calibre weapon (probably a .25 or something) 'cos the victim was shot in the chest but wasn’t seriously injured.
I was in a high explosives introduction training course today. It was pretty sweet, I must admit. I was familiar with 60% of the material already, but the other 40% was pretty damn cool.
I’m going to one of my favorite elementary schools today where I will probably get glomped by hordes of first graders. Not really exciting, but it’s the best I’ve got.
