We who have seen Iron Man 2, salute you!

I need to check on the interwebs about post-credits scenes. I stayed (often alone) through the credits of the last 4 or 5 movies I’ve seen for no reason, so I stopped doing that - and boom, I miss a scene.

My take on it was that

The element was required for a new form of electricity, not for the suit per se, and the father had worked out what the atomic requirements were for it, but didn’t have the means (ie particle accelerator) to create it.

Ah, could be. Still a bit confusing, but sometimes you just have to gloss over it and accept that Something Significant just occurred.

I think because the War Machine suit already had access built into it from Stark.

Favorite non movie part:

One of the trailers we saw was for the new Twilight movie, and afterwards a lot of the guys started mock sheering and clapping and a guy yelled in a girly voice “I can’t waaaaait!!”

It was funny.

There was cheering in my theater when that trailer started. Unfortunately, some of it was coming from my girlfriend :smack:

I thought the movie was a lot of fun - not quite as good as the first one, but still fun.

Agreed with all of this. The first one was legitimately pretty good; this one was a pretty fun summer movie. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and I was very happy with what I got for my $8. The pacing on this one, especially, was vastly inferior to the first, and I think the need to stick all of the SHIELD stuff in there may have been a big part of that.

That said, it was completely worth it if that’s the reason I got my Scarlett Johansson fix.

I just saw it and actually liked it better than the first one. I guess if I have to complain about it, it was pretty long and it did seem like a couple of storylines could have been cut, while others could have been explored in more depth. Sure we could have done without SHIELD, but what movie isn’t made better with a little Samuel L Jackson in it?

In the end, it’s sort of like Tony Stark himself. Loud, flashy, but doesn’t take himself and much of anything else too seriously.

Just saw it last night and LOVED it. I think I like the sequel better than the first movie. Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko/Whiplash is genuinely creepy; he’s so burly and ugly and tattooed that you sure wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley. His interactions with Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer are hilarious; any Russian-speaking Dopers know what Vanko’s actually saying during those scenes? Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t provide subtitles for most of Vanko’s dialogue.

Loved this film. Ivan is the *man!! *

I hate Rhodey. I thought I hated him because of Terrance Howard. But now that I see one of my favorite actors playing him, I hate him even more.

Everything else, excellent. Hammer describing the weapons…win. Hammer dancing, double win.

Usually when they have white people dancing in movies, they have them do corny dances like the running man, or the worm or the cabbage patch. To see Hammer getting down for reals, I mean, really hittin’ the James Brown…that was just fun.

Saw it, enjoyed it quite a bit. Had the added benefit of an earthquake rocking the seats for quite a while, RIGHT when Whiplash was stomping down the track.
Much better than 3-D!!

I loved WHiplash. I mean, that guy was just awesome.

At the same time, I wish they’d explored a little bit more his story. Now, don’t get me wrong, he works very well as is. And it might be a let down to see where he comes from more. However, you can just look at that guy and see his life is nothing. He could probably have money and power if he wanted it, but it’s just meaningless to him. He’s the anti-Tony. Tony doesn’t care about money and fame because it’s thrown at him. Whiplash just doesn’t care: he’s pretty obviously been on the crapheap his whole life. I guess I’m just curiouas as to what, exactly, made him into a blind force for vengeance. He wasn’t even really out for blood generally: all he wanted was to destroy Tony Stark. That was guy was scary as all get out, and probably on the edge of complete insanity no less than Tony.

Bravo, Mickey Rourke, bravo.

Word on the street that the post-credits moment was not the only reference to that particular Marvel property.

Mild reference to Easter Egg, but it has a minor, early plot point.

Suposedly the moment right before Stark visits Ivanko in the Russian prison, someone is taking a photo of a blond man in a prison cell. I read that the blond man was the actor who will potray Thor. I just saw the flash, and I knew to be looking for it.

I really liked the way they hung a lampshade on the change in actors for Rhoadey…
“Yeah, I’m here - it’s me - let’s move on…”

Why WAS Terence Howard replaced? I’d read awhile back that it was a complete surprise to him when he was dropped, but I never heard an explanation.

According to my wife, he wanted a pretty major salary bump once everyone saw how well the first movie did. Couldn’t tell you how much but enough so that it was cheaper to get Don Cheadle in there.

Here’s a cite. Sort of. In finding this, I also saw reports that the studio wanted Howard to take a cut versus Howard wanting a raise. Anyway, there was cash involved.

Saw it today and I enjoyed it. No major complaints although I liked the first one more.

I did think, and thought the same about the first, that the “big fight” with the bad guy was over way too quickly. The whole movie is building up to the climatic showdown and it’s “bap-bap-BANG! Ok, we’re done!”

Saw this morning. Liked it. Not as good as the first one, but the first one is my favorite superhero movie period, and this one’s pretty close. Not any “great” scenes (except for maybe the lasers, and the first Iron Man/Vanko fight), but no bad ones either. Lots of good ones. And again, Downey Jr. just completely makes the movie. So refreshing to have a superhero who’s just a cocky badass instead of moping about his powers and responsibilities all the time. I agree the SHIELD/other superheroes stuff is a little strange to digest, but I’m interested in seeing how it goes (even if I think Thor is so inherently silly I dunno how it’ll mesh).

Didn’t really like Vanko at first (kinda wish they had done a straight-up Crimson Dynamo) but as the movie went on, he grew on me. Wish he got more background, but oh well. And the last fight scene was a bit too short. I had the same complain about the Iron Monger fight, too - I think Fauvreau needs to learn how to do a nice, long climatic fight scene at the end of the movie instead of one that ends in five minutes.

Haven’t seen it yet, but all I can say for sure is that however good Scarlett looks in a cat suit, she would look better out of it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I thought they lingered on that scene just a second too long for it to be insignificant.

But you’re right, it’s very blink and you’ll miss it.

I saw it with my boys yesterday. It was good. Like others, I didn’t like it as much as the first movie.

My complaint I suppose is how hollow it all seemed to me. It was a little too slick and noisy. I enjoyed the first movie so much due to the sharp contrast between the excellent acting/dialogue and the fighting scenes. In this one it just felt like there was too much shouting, characters talking over one another, rapid-fire one-liners…it was so babbling at times.

Downey’s skills as an actor felt overshadowed by all the glitz. It was like he was sometimes being drowned out.

I did enjoy it though. Iron Man’s new suit mods are cool. The villain was cool (loved the teeth!)…and that moment where he props up the particle accelerator he’s building with [redacted] was pretty funny. I laughed out loud at that.
