Web Hosting options

A friend is asking me to help her set up a website for her non-profit organization. I’ve written the site (straight HTML) and we’re looking at hosting options.

Her organization’s needs are pretty limited, low disk and bandwidth, 20 or so email addresses with forwarding, password protected areas, ability to run limited scripts (calendar), low cost, and good service.

Yahoo looks like it covers everything, but at a higher cost than some places I’ve never heard of, such as Westhost and OLM. So, is there any benefit to going with a more recognized name?

IMHO, not really. Check out the Web Hosting Talk forums for reviews of smaller hosts.

I use dixiesys.com for my hosting needs and never had a problem with them that wasn’t solved w/in 24 hours or so (some database setup and transfer stuff that I simply didn’t know how to do). But of course, you should always do your own research.

For what it’s worth, I used OLM for a year or two. They were pretty good. We only switched because a partner of ours offered hosting services and we wanted to push the business there.
