Ok, so I’m putting together a Web site for a an acquaintance of mine who just purchased a domain name. She didn’t purchase a web hosting package, however, and is insistent that I should be able to publicly publish her Web site under her domain name without getting Web hosting. I’ve explained to her that it’s just not possible - she has to have someone host her Web site for it to be online under the domain name, and hosting has not been included in the domain name she purchased. I feel like I’m in the twilight zone. She just won’t believe me that she has to purchase Web hosting. Am I hallucinating here? I mean, you gotta have someone host your Web site, right? Unless you’re willing to run a server from your home. Right?
And does anyone have suggestions on a good Web hosting service?
Of course you’re not hallucinating. I may not be the one to mention the correct data, because I will have a hosting in my town for my place that is coming in some weeks. But *you do need * a server to host your web site. Your files have to “live” somewhere.
Another option is free sites as Yahoo’s Geocities, for example, but even there you have limited space and annoying mini-windows with ads and stuff like that. It’s not comfortable. But I’ll let another Doper to give you the real advicement, and some site that explains her what she doesn’t believe from you.

I was referred, now I refer. A great interface, good webhosting packages, etc.
Thank you, thank you thank you! I really appreciate the suggestions and confirmation that I’m not hallucinating. While I’ve designed Web sites before, I’ve usually just been handed a password and directed to the FTP client and told “here, use this,” then developed everything off-site. Added to that, I’ve never had formal training, and haven’t done one from start to finish for a while. After having a conversation with this person (who is normally perfectly reasonable), I was beginning to think that I was getting Alzheimers. Thanks again!
By the way, has anybody used Mozilla’s composer to develop Web sites? I just recently got open office & mozilla and I’ve been tinkering with it a bit - it’s really easy to learn. For some reason, I find it a lot easier than Dreamweaver.
I’ve been, (and a trip to my site will obviously confirm this), LOVING Imageready far too much these past few weeks. Of course I always do things in strange backwards ways so…
YMMV, and probably should.
