Web information experts -- I need your help!

Does anyone know where I can find a reliable estimate of how many e-commerce web sites there are? My boss asked me to dig this up for a presentation, and I’ve been coming up empty.

Thanks!

“International Data Corp. reports there are about 700,000 e-commerce sites up and running in 1999. By 2003, IDC expects the number of e-commerce sites to reach 1.2 million.”

"E-commerce between U.S. businesses will surge at 33 percent a year by 2003, accounting for $2.8 trillion in value — or one-fourth of all corporate purchasing, according to a study released in December 1999 by the Boston Consulting Group.

Purchasing in the retail, automotive, shipping, industrial, high-tech and government sectors will drive the majority of growth in the business-to-business sector, according to the Boston Consulting Group report.

In 1998, U.S. B-to-B e-commerce totaled $671 billion, the Boston Consulting Group report found. Of that, $92 billion was Internet-based and $579 billion in transactions were made using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) over private networks.

Forester Research in Boston expects business-to-business e-commerce to grow from $43 billion in 1998 to $1.3 trillion in 2003, versus $108 billion in consumer e-commerce. New York Times, Nov. 28, 1999"
