Web Q: How Do I Make An Image Smaller?

…without having it look all chunky?

      • At the moment have PSP7 and Photoshop 7 [trial], will have the real thing probably in a week or so. I can make simple (vector-drawn, usually) images that look great at 600x900, still very good at 200x300, but that look like crap at 40x60, which is as small as they often need to go… I have tried experimenting in PSP with different types of reductions at different color depths; what I think might work is a reduction method that “smears” the outside edge out a bit, but leaves the interior sharper, if you follow me. Do you? Or is there some better way (probably in Photoshop) that works way better? (I can do screen captures, but haven’t had time or the inclination to mess with Photoshop much, as it is…)

In PSP, make sure your color depth is at 16 million, then do what they call a “smart resize.” If it looks too blurred, run the sharpening filter once.

If you then want to reduce the color depth to 256, use an optimized median cut.

At 40x60, though, you’re still going to lose a lot of detail.
