Just think of what went into the Webb telescope to get this picture.
Remarkable. Breathtaking.

Changed forum – this could be IMHO, if you prefer that to MPSIMS, but this felt like the best fit. It’s sorta even a breaking news thread.
Yeah, I’ll go along with this, but Webb doesn’t seem mundane.
Thanks for moving it. I have great difficulty figuring where stuff goes.
Most of what goes in this forum isn’t mundane. From “war in Ukraine” to “i had a new baby” or “i was just diagnosed with cancer” people put stuff they care a lot about in this forum.
I think the name is meant to be taken ironically. I’m not a fan of the name, honestly, but i do know what goes here.
All this is already being discussed in the other Webb discussion thread. Specifically, the discussion of today’s preview begins at about Post 637:
Ooh, nice lensing! It’s easy to see why this was one of the first targets, because lensing images are a scientific bonanza: You get to see more distant objects more closely than you’d otherwise be able to, and you also get information about the mass distribution of the lens.
Of course, the downside is that those two types of information are completely intertwined, so it takes a lot of clever analysis to tease out what’s what. But that’s another reason to take the image early, so you have plenty of time to do the analysis.
Astonishing, seeing this side by side with the same view via Hubble you can see how clear it is.
It bodes well for huge detail on closer objects and an even deeper view at the edge of the observable universe.
