Webebot.exe

I just found this file has been running on my PC here at work.

It’s located in the windows/system directory and runs every time I start.

I scanned it with NAV and came up with nothing.

Anyone know what this file is for?

Thanks.

Since Google has nothing on it, and since it’s on your PC at work, my guess is it’s an in-house program designed to monitor your Internet usage. “Web E-bot”.

I’d check one of your co-worker’s machines and see if they have it. If they do or don’t, I’d rename the extension, reboot and see if you suddenly get a visit from the IS fairy.

I found a reference in a newsgroup on Google, and it looks like it’s Spector.

If so, this is not a good thing for you.

Yeah; it sounds like Spector has been installed. Check out http://www.spectorsoft.com/

Sorry, I didn’t see SmackFu’s link to their site.

Thanks guys.

I too did some searches and they came up empty. Special thanks to “SmackFu” for the reference.

I have confirmed that that is exactly what that file is part of. (I now also have full control of the Spector software. )

Here’s the catch though. It was obviously installed as I have installed Illustrator 8 onto this PC and they are forever coming and removing it (Yes, this is at work) and they want to catch me in the act.

This is a proper/legal copy of Illustrator, but my IT department claims to be a stickler for ‘unauthorised’ software and that they can get into legal ‘hot water’ for not honouring the License Agreement. Particularly for a product that the company does not own. I completely understand this, but as I am the marketing person in a sales department, I need Ill8 installed for promotional material.

[sub]My boss talked to IT and they said they’d “Get on it.” when we asked them to purchase and install a company copy…that was 5 months ago and they still haven’t “Gotten on it”. I was given permission to install it be my boss…but I digress[/sub]

Anyhoo, while looking up info on Spector, I found that in the user licence agreement that any company using this software to monitor employees must inform the employee that they are being monitored (Their site is down, but it is in the FAQ’s on the Spector site.) They never told me; hence they have broken their user agreement. Not a big deal over all, but now the head IT guys will have to answer questions to the VP’s.

This, of course, is causing a bit of a stir in the office.
