Website advertising revenue

I am wondering how much money the average biz site makes from it ads. For instance, this site makes something from theirs. What’s the scoop on website ads?

This isn’t average, but it is interesting, if you’re interested in that sort of thing.

Income from website advertising is going to vary enormously, from literally pennies to thousands or maybe even millions of dollars. I am not sure an average is going to be very meaningful.

I have web site with good Google Page Rank (I am at 5: for comparison, the Dope is a 6, and the maximum is 10) but low traffic, due to its esoteric subject matter. I put some Google Adsense ads on it about 18 months ago and it has so far accumulated less than $20 from clickthroughs (and they don’t actually pay out until you get to $100). On the other hand, I have also made close to $2,000 from other advertisers, who are more concerned with getting their links onto a high Page Ranked page (thus boosting their own Page Rank) than actual clickthroughs.

The point is, it is a complicated market (even for very small fry, like me), with many tiny players and some huge ones.

What do you mean by “average biz site”? Most businesses do not run ads on their sites and attempt to make money by selling their products/services. Many of the sites that try to make money from ads are not really business sites at all - they’re blogs, webcomics or something more along the lines of a hobby than a business.

I guess what I’m getting at are those ads like “I lost 20 lbs. in 10 days using X product”. It’s like those pop up ads and the ones on the side bars or say “I made $20,000 with Amazon/Google, etc.”. The ones that actually advertise a product for sale different than the website itself.
