I ran across a website once and it listed (based on number of hits), the most popular websites. I believe it went something such as 1) Google 2)MSN 3) Yahoo, etc. Needless to say I did NOT bookmark this.:smack:
A fairly good ego boost was that my site was listed approximatley 123,000. I thought website owners had to pay for this information and so was surprised to see this website for free.
Needless to say, trying to find this site on a search engine is ridiculoulsy difficult because looking up “website popularity” brings up all the pay sites proclaiming how they can get you in the best search engines, on the first pages, etc. Looking up other terms such as “top sites” or “popular sites” brings up those
same pay sites.
Is anyone familiar with a website such as the Top 200,000 (or whatever it was called) ?

The Alexa site is very close to the website I once encountered. But geez, Alexa wants $2,499 for a top 100,000 List !!!
Perhaps the site I found came and went very quickly (Internet sites do that a lot)
Since we are kind of on the subject, here’s a site that surmises how Google actually “ranks” sites.
Or, in other words, if you want to get your site listed “higher” in the Google search, do this:
http://www.searchengineworld.com/spiders/google.htm
You are very likely thinking about Alexa then. Although they definitely won’t be giving the Top 100 000 list for free, it’s very easy to check the popularity and ranking of individual sites there. From the direct link to Top 500 we can see the current situation (it’s probably a bit surprising for some to see that over half of the most popular sites are Asian, usually Korean). Certain site’s specific information can be seen by following the “site info” link, where it can be seen how site has ranked in the past, too.
If you want to check how some other site fares it can be done by altering the URL, so we can see that Straight Dope’s current ranking is around 9000, which means this site manages fairly well in Top 10 000. Also from the reviews in that same page we can see that some recently banned right-wingers aren’t happy with SDMB at all :D. You can put whatever site you like in the url field, Alexa will give some info even about very small sites, if the site has been online for enough time. While this ranking method isn’t exactly 100% accurate, it’s intersting nonetheless.

Yep that is it !!!
As of the moment my site stands at 266,138 in popularity. (Quite a “slide” from 123,000). Still it is a nice ego boost to see my site having any ranking.
Thanks to everyone for making the effort to find that site for me.
(Incidentally, my site is www.1728.com )
