Website statistics site?

Someone recently posted a link to a website where you can see the number of visitors a website gets. There was a histogram on the page.

What is the name of that site?

Alexa.com?

That’s the one. At least, that’s the one that was recently linked to. There are others (like Nielsen’s NetRatings) but I think they’re all fee-based.

Thank you. That’s it.

Also Quantcast, which offers some interesting tidbits as well as pageviews, although I’d take their “demographic” information with a grain of salt.

There’s also http://www.compete.com.

The thing to remember about all these sites (except for Quantcast if the site has been “Quantcasted”) is that they are all estimates, and the estimates can be pretty skewed.

A large part of Alexa’s estimates are based on people using the Alexa toolbar, and users tend to be webmaster types. So if the site doesn’t cater to the types that download the toolbar, people will be undercounted. Compete uses sample data as well.

Long story short, when I compare my own analytics and site statistics with what compete, alexa, and quantcast have, the “real” numbers vary with the estimates from those sites.

I’ve been using http://www.trafficestimate.com/ but I have no idea how accurate it is.
