Websites that have gone down the drain

www.seanbaby.com (warning: It contains some NWS ads and articles) is still pretty good, with lots of archived material. If you’re into the 80s, you’ll be greatly entertained. However it seems he’s only updating every several months now, and those updates consist of him posting uncensored versions of the watered down articles he writes for EGM. Plus, his site has pop ups now.

What sites have gone/started to suck, after a good period of being great?

the onion has been bad for at least a year

The Brunching Shuttlecocks was a great nigh-daily humour site. Then a great fairly-often site. Then a really good weekly site. Then a good “when we get to it” site.

Now it’s a great archive.

Penny Arcade got very Not Funny for a long while, but has since made with the funny again.

Angst Technology (a webcomic I used to read) and Sluggy Freelance (ditto) were good for a while, but the creator either stopped posting as much or got caught up in intriciate, nonsensical storylines, or both.

Something Awful isn’t nearly as good as it used to be.

GameSpot used to be the best site for game reviews, but is now all paysite-y and lame.

SatireWire, how we miss thee.

Personally, I really, really miss www.suck.com.

I had a little crush on Poly.

Something Awful was great, but since the introduction of several writers and the public raving/ranting over last year’s engaugement breakup it’s gone downhill.

I was also ticked off when IGN dropped their Sci-Fi section.

Yeah, I know I’m sick and all that… but steakandcheese.com has gone straight to hell.

Ok, it was already in hell, but at least Kap had a handle on it when he was running the show. Some new “thing” has hold of it now, and it has turned into a porn-ad-per-pixel thing. It did not need any “help”. Really.

(sigh) Man, I miss the good ol’ weird stuff. It has narrowed down my email shock-list to nothing, nowadays. I just hate going there now. Bastidges.

[sub] Anybody that goes there now…beware. It ain’t funny/shocking/whatever no more. [/sub] :frowning:

I kinda liked Lowtax’s public meltdown (and I enjoy the meltdowns here, because I’m a bad person), but very few of the new writers are funny. And Lowtax basically does a “Ha ha! I’m Lowtax” column from time to time, but that’s it.

The “meltdown” from his girlfriend? That was pretty hilarious, but kinda sad too. I always found Integral’s articles to be unfunny, rambling and incoherent. The feud between the writers is sort of funny, especially when they screw around with the handles.

Seanbaby was the first thing that came to mind before even opening the thread, that man is a genius of comedy. Aslan you can get a small seanbaby fix here . He’s written a few other articles for that magazine, but i’m having a hard time finding them.

theendisnear, this is the link you’re looking for:

Pretty awesome.

Jennicam might as well turn off the webcam and give it up. Ever since she fell in love she’s been boring as hell. I guess she’s grown up and lost her exhibitionist tendencies. Now there is nothing going on on the cam and her journal consists of talking about her cats and her pathetic, ever-complaining lifemate. Where is the girl who once tried to express milk from her breasts even though she wasn’t lactating? She was an idiot, but at least it was entertaining.

http://www.onefootball.com was a great site. I haven’t found a replacement yet.

http://www.formula1.com sucks ever since it’s been bought over and made the official F1 site.

Could someone please fill me in on Something Awful? Meltdown? Breakup? I used to love that place but had to swear it off because the forums were so funny that they were causing problems with time management. The online romance thing was a little weird too.

Lowtax and Emily “Integral” Riegel were dating. She became a writer on the site, not a very good one IMO and likely because of the relationship. Anyway, she was supposed to meet him off at an airport, but instead stayed home all day and made up a sory about the CIA abducting her or something. Lowtax then posted a rant about it as a front page update, ending his relationship with her and her writing for SA.com

Do you have a link to that? I vaguely remember it but would like to refresh my memory.

Right here.

Enjoy, I guess.

Fark

Its still “okay”, but they’ve got so many members posting now that its sort of lost the community feel it used to have.

Can I mention that Swiss song-lyric cite (don’t want to type the actual url in case it’s still any good; it might violate SDMB policy)?

It was great. Any song you wanted to know the lyrics of, all you had to do was look it up. Predictably, it got closed down (or greatly restricted) due to legal challenges. Which is great for ASCAP, but bad for you if you want to know the words to some obscure 1960’s song and are now being expected to hunt down the sheet music some place to find out.
