Crud with the html. Sorry.
“If”, by Bread, would be my choice. Simple, sweet and would sound great on a guitar.
David Grey - “Sail Away”
I play weddings a lot lately, and our guitarist/singer is nearly always asked to play this one.
chord chart (Ya gotta capo up on this one, but it’s simple to play)
Not very well known, but if it was me, I’d go with…
Dropkick Murphys - Forever
On their live album, a guy came up on stage and proposed to his girlfriend, then they played the song. It was a great moment to hear.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
This song would be perfect for a wedding. It is supposed to be played with an acoustic guitar and it’s fairly well known to boot.
‘‘One day we will die and our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea/but for now we are young let us lay in the sun and count every beautiful thing we can see’’
I hope that song is not a suggestion.
There is always Your Song by Elton John.
She’s Got a Way by Billy Joel
In My Life by the Beatles
Poisoning Pigeons in the Park by Tim Leary
Thunder Road by the Boss
“Up on Cripple Creek”–mind you, maybe that’s just because of the circumstances of my own marriage…
I’ve always loved John Denver’s song “Follow Me”…that was sung at my own wedding.
Since he’s a Dave Matthews fan, how about “Lover Lay Down”?
Or the DMB song my nephew and his wife used as their first dance at their reception, “Where Are You Goin”.
I am not even reading the other posts.
‘Runaway Train’, Roseanne Cash
I have never heard more romantic lyrics; find it, play it
“Get Your Biscuits In The Oven And Your Buns In Bed” - Kinky Freidman
Or
You could use what my best friend did
“Give Yourself To Love” - Kate Wolf

It’s a soft sexy ballad, not what NPR thinks country music is.
If it’s Springsteen, it’s ‘Rosalita’, or, for the truly twisted, ‘Jeannie Needs a Shooter’, co-authored and recorded by the recently LG WZ.
i also would vote for California stars for sure… its pretty easy to play too!!
I’ll second “In My Life.”
But I think my first vote would go to the Velvet Underground’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror,” which is lovely and sweet and everything no one expects VU to be.
For an old world romantic standard:Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes (search the page on ‘thine’).
Peace.
Or, how about: Springsteen’s Trapped?
Also:

The name is actually Troubadour
At our wedding we used Longer by Dan Fogelberg
It took a lot of soul searching, but when we were wed, we went with Tish Hinojosa’s “Who Showed You The Way To My Heart” with its sweet tune, heartfelt sentiment and gorgeous verse in Spanish.
It was movingly done, and in two weeks we will celebrate five years together.
