I just finished it last night. It was enjoyable on its own merits, but a couple of things didn’t sit well with me. The whole “normie” vs “outcasts” thing didn’t sit well with me. For the Addams to identify as outcasts, they would have to admit they’re not like everyone else.
I think The Addams Family work best in a vacuum. They just are. No explanation needed.
That said, the show about unusual kids in an unusual school was fun. The mystery was engaging. Overall, I enjoyed it.
I just finished it, and this was a big piece of my takeaway. My daughter went through a Disney Zombies phase a couple years ago, and there were big callbacks to that show (about a high school with zombie and werewolf cliques), and not in a good way. Wednesday’s constant jokes about death, after awhile, started feeling like an insecure teen’s schtick, the equivalent of the kid who puts a Monty Python quote into every conversation. And when Morticia looked at her nails and then decided not to participate in some good old fashioned graverobbing, I was like, who even are you?
Overall, though, I had a pretty good time with the show. I guessed it was Ms. Thornhill at the end of the fourth episode, although I never did see Tyler coming (and frankly feel cheated, given that Wednesday’s main clue was a psychic vision). The death-by-bees at the end was a great touch (although there was an earlier line about bears being in hibernation, despite the bees being active, and I raged at their complete lack of knowledge about how any of this works).
Yes. This is how I usually feel about Armisen, too, yet I quite liked him in this. He reminded me of Jackie Coogan’s Fester. I saw none of his usual annoying shtick. I might not have known it was him at first if I didn’t know ahead of time. Honestly, I really didn’t know he had it in him.
I suppose that should have been expected, it was after all about Wednesday and not the Addams family. It might not be fair, but anytime I see a school with supernatural elements I immediately think of Hogwarts. It would have been more enjoyable to see Wednesday at a regular school, but they went a different direction. I wasn’t sure who was the targeted audience for this as it seemed a bit too bloody for younger people but a bit too simplistic for older people. Either way, I don’t think I was the targeted demographic. I’ll watch season 2 if they make it, but it’s not on my must watch list.
If they’re looking for a story to option in the same vein, I’d freaking love to see an adaptation of Naomi Novik’s Scholomance series, about a wizard school with a 90% fatality rate. But please find a different showrunner; I’m just about over Burton.
Late to the party. We watched it last week. Found it an amusing enough diversion, but not sure I get the record-breaking interest. Basically an adequate mash-up of high school angst and supernatural.
I was disappointed that they didn’t develop more of the other students. Was there ANY detail of the vamps - other than that they apparently wear sunglasses? And are sirens the same as mermaids? And what was the beekeeper kid’s “outcast nature”? I had a bit of a problem with “pilgrims” supposedly having built that big stone tomb. And for crying out loud, Goody wasn’t a given name.
The Wednesday character was fun - but over time I hoped for a broader range than the same non-blinking, slack faced stare.
No idea what they will do for S2. Can they go back to the school after all that happened to the school and town? Quite a few of the “main-ish” characters were killed.
One question - was ANY of the school building real or was it all CGI? If so, it was sure well done.
They can only cram so much information into 8 episodes. I imagine if/when we get more seasons, that’s when the other cliques will get fleshed out.
Also, Eugene’s power was that he could control the bees.
I assume they’re just laying the groundwork for that morph into something more powerful. Remember, Enid’s only power at the beginning was that she could extend her fingernails. Same super power Meg Griffin has.
Read somewhere that S2 may feature some Wednesday/Enid shipping as canon which, if true, IMO they can just fuck off with that noise. I’ve nothing against lesbian characters but “Here are two female characters audiences like, therefore let’s make them lesbians (or bi, I suppose) out of the blue for fanservice” is always an annoying twist.
I’m hoping this turns out to be unsubstantiated internet speculation.
To take an interest in or hope for a romantic relationship between (fictional characters or famous people), whether or not the romance actually exists: I’m shipping for those guys—they would make a great couple!
Anyone claiming that is just wishful thinking, there is absolutely nothing about season 2 yet. As far as I know it has not even been officially renewed.
