Weekly Comic Book Discussion 2/1/2007

Here it is.

52 #39 was interesting, engaging, touched on a lot of stories, but a let-down in one respect - despite a cover blurb about Montoya fighting a Dragon, Montoya is nowhere to be seen this issue.

Jack of Fables was good, and Ex Machina gave us a 90-degree-left-turn in the direction of the book.

52 goes where everybody totally expected they’d go with a character they named “Hannibal”. Good story, but  Of course, the Mads are remaining my favorite storyline.

Teen Titans, I think, made every Batgirl fanboy on the Internet pause and go “Ohhhh!” Hope this one stays good after Johns leaves as writer.

Ion seems to be setting up whatever the new multiverse/hypertime equivalent will be for DC. It’s allowed me to accept that we’re just going to suffer through a disjointed, random storyline so they can play show-and-tell with the new DCverse status quo.

Also, Comic Store Guys told me that DC will be starting up another weekly after 52 ends – “Countdown” is what they heard it’ll be called. It’s supposed to count down (duh) from 52 to 1, at which point there’ll no doubt be another DCverse crossover event. Anyone else hear this?

52 - When they showed Mercury, I didn’t realise where he’d been hiding until I looked back the panels before. MiniMetal Men!
Teen Titans - …Ohhhh! :stuck_out_tongue:
Finally, an explanation. Certainly could have been worse.

It’s not really new - The Bleed was long a part of Wildstorm continuity. I thought the cameo by

Captain Atom

was a welcome one, allowing us a glimpse into what he’s been up to since last we saw him.

Teen Titans looks like it will shape up to be a good arc for Johns to go out on.

In other ‘Hey, haven’t seen HIM in a while’ news, Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters addresses my sole nitpick about the series so far with the return of a Freedom Fighter from the past.

I have a wacky theory about 52.

In Omega Men and JSA we have mentions of dark matter/gravity related to the dead souls of another universe.

In Titans, people can no longer seem to successfully clone.

In 52, Doc Magnus lost the ability to bring his robots to true life.

I think these things are all related - the multiverse shifted, and clones and robots were no longer behaving like they used to because they were no longer receiving souls. Souls that used to come from an alternate universe.

Morrow helped Magnus fix his math to tap into the shifted multiverse again.

Thoughts?

All New Atom #7: Why did I wait so long to get into this?
Orange soda or death!

Blue Beetle #7, 10, 11: Why did I wait so long to get into this?
Don’t mind him. He’s just upset this fight won’t give him a chance to make a speech about poverty.
I’d totally listen to a band named “Forehead Full of Justice.”

Ion #10: What Lightray said. I’m enjoying having a Kyle book and seeing the new universe, but it feels like it could have been done better.

Teen Titans #43: That makes sense… kinda. I can’t believe Johns is leaving.

52 #39: Meh. I really hope they aren’t taking the Spectre out of Mr. Terrific’s origin.

I doubt it. Waid probably just thought he didn’t have room to explain that the Spectre, not the current Spectre or the one before that but the first one, told him a story in the two pages given.

Blue Beetle #11: This is just old skool Marvelesque fun. “Forehead full of justice!” A good mix of humor, adventure, and just a touch of angst.

52 Week Thirty-Nine: Very solid. I agree that naming the guy “Hannibal” was a bit of a spoiler, but what really made the scene was the tablecloth and place setting.

Teen Titans #43: This is good, but it felt short. Like it was half and issue, or something.

I picked up Graphic Classics: H P Lovecraft from Eureka Productions. Graphic novel. Alt-comics talent illustrating his creepy tales. Good stuff, too.

And I picked up another GN, The Grave Robber’s Daughter by Richard Sala, who is the obvious spiritual heir to Charles Addams.

I got three Marvel books this week - Black Panther continues to not impress with the heavy-handedness of the writing, but some of the specific details are nice. We learn how Cap learned of the spy amidst the Anti-Reg side, at least.

Ultimate FF wraps the Thanos arc with a nod towards the big weapon that Reed’s supposed to build, and guess what? It’s a familiar one.

Ultimate Civil War : Spider-Ham - lackluster, but it’s still nice to see Mr. Porker. And he gets in a great meta-jab at Civil War.

Hawkgirl and JSA : Classified. Yay! Hawkman’s back, so I can drop the book. Though - the Kriby device from the big DC preview image that has been circulating the net shows up - apparently having been left by a parademon in ancient Egypt. And hidden away by Hath-Set.

That leaves Blue Beetle and JLA Classified, both of which were solid reads.

Annihilation #6: Wrapping up the other major event in the Marvel Universe. Longish story short. Galactus busts free and trashes the crap out of the annihilation wave. Phyla gets the quantum bands from Annihilus before Nova pulls his insides outside. Ronan becomes head of the Kree. Most surprisingly of all, it actually appears that Thanos is really and permanently dead at the hands of Drax the Destroyer.Okay. We’ll have to wait and see how that last one holds up. This was a good series though. Much better than Civil War. I’m actually looking forward to follow up series from this.
