Weekly Comic Book Discussion 3/6/2008

Got last week’s Action and Countdown, in addition to this weeks allotment.

Buffy : Whoa. … just Whoa. And the return of the butt-monkey!

Countdown #08 - did not advance the plot at all. again. wondering if they’ll ever move this along.

Supergirl #27 - the writers of this book need to be force-fed Ritalin, so they can stay on one storyline and stop going off on tangents. each issue is “and now for something… completely different.”

(the Blood of) the All New Atom #21 - nice. also: Ryan’s suit looks like an old Micronauts toy I used to have.

Green Lantern #28 - they’re moving faster than I’d expected, although some of the developments here were predictable

particularly Laira becoming a Lantern of one of the other Corps. and I hope the brief opener on Ysmault means we’ll return there for more later.

Okay, I have to say this: I saw the news on multiple websites, and I can’t find a decent readable scan of the scene

with the two of them in bed together!

Can anyone help me? tearing at hair

There’s a Livejournal community where the image will most assuredly be posted.

Countdown to Adventure #7: Last issue I accused Forefunner of being a Mary Sue. I still think that’s true, but the fact that the entire premise of her story just got yanked out from under her does put a kink in that argument.

Green Lantern #28: I’m honestly conflicted about Law #2. It’s actually a pretty logical extension, and real cops enjoy that power, but real cops don’t have the versatility the GLs do. Since I’m feeling the ambivalence, I think that’s a win for this book. Also, the Red Lanterns look cool and the Orange Lanterns are promising.

**Detective Comics #842:**Dude, I barely remembered the armor, let alone thought it deserved an origin story. I really find it hard to believe that he’d care about it. He’s Batman, the criminals are superstitious, not him!

Countdown to Final Crisis #8: Oops! We’ve had actual plot movement in the last few consecutive issues. We can’t have that continue! I love Bizarro, but I don’t like it when they get too cute with the whole backwards/opposite thing, like they did with his origin spread.

The All-New Atom #12: Well, I’ll give it a shot, but without the humor it’s really painfully generic. Head sticks out like a shore thumb, and his dialog is just off. This could transition from weird/zany/action to weird/pulpy/action, but now it’s just blah.

**Jonah Hex #29:**Those Indians suffer from the Law of Inverse Ninjas something awful, and that thing with the scorpion made very little sense.

In fact, I went there as soon as I found out the news.

(It got posted just a little while ago. Given that Whedon’s used the

magically [del]delicious[/del] gay plotline before, with Willow,

I’m not sure what to think of this.)

Atom - I am Not Happy. Ryan’s acting like a dick - I can forgive that with the ‘week without sleep’ stuff, but I’m not really happy with it in combination with the other criticisms. An almost Ennis-like contempt for the super-hero genre is present. And the ‘breathing chicken nuggets’ thing was stupid. Gee, Ry, you’ve been doing just fine without separately shrinking air up 'till now - so did Ray, the impostor Atom, Panda and Dwarfstar - what makes you think it won’t work now?

Cable - No comment on the story or the writing, yet, but the art is fabulous.

Lord Havok and the Extremists - I really like Diehard. Too bad we know he’s going to die.

New Frontier Special - Wonderful, as expected. The Robin/Kid Flash story had some iffy lines in the captions, but, in all it was good. Wally’s alias being Wally Wood was fun.

New Dynamix - I’m relatively new to the WSU, save for the Authority and Gen13 (which I read during Adam Warren’s run), so I have no idea who Omni/Black Halo, Gramalkin or the Sword are. Really enjoyed it anyway.

Green Lantern - Anyone surprised by the last page? Or anything else in the issue? Thought not. Very enjoyable execution, though.

Countdown to Adventure - Well, that’s a relief. After Starfire’s panel in Titans East, I though she and Buddy were going to get together. Nice to know otherwise.
