Yes, Lo3W # 4 finally got me back to my comic shop. We finally get some answers about the lightning rod, about Star Boy’s mission (although I’d think that Superboy’s grave would be sufficiently notable that an incognito gravedigger wouldn’t a) be able to dig it up and b) would have an easier time finding it than Star Boy seemed to (though that could be his mental problems)), some personal resolution for Sun Boy and Dawnstar/Wildfire. The last-page reveal about the Time Trapper actually makes some sense, though as a major fan of the TMK run, I could have hoped for some more explicit reference to the whole Valor mess (and some cameos by Legionnaires of that era) than merely talking about erasing their memories of Superboy.
I can’t wait for the final issue. Hopefully the June release date is a more solid prediction than prior projected release dates have been.
Other pick-ups:
Blackest Night # 1 - Yep, I got it before anyone else did! Since my comic shop owners know I can’t come in on Saturday, they let me have it early. Sadly, there’s nothing here to truly spoil. The entire half-issue-long plot is a ham-handed foreshadowing conversation between Hal and Barry over Batman’s unmarked grave about people not seeming to ever stay dead. It also features pages about the various-colored Lantern Corps in “Secret Files” style. The most ludicrous of these is where, for Black Lanterns, “Death” is described as an emotion. The Black Lantern page shows some hands coming out of graves, from which many fanboys will no doubt spend time predicting who will show up as Black Lanterns.
R.E.B.E.L.S. # 3 - Well, now we know why Wildfire and Dawnstar of the future Legion have a thing for one another. We also catch up with another of Dox’s old teammates, but for the most part, this was more of a set-up issue than an action issue.
JSA # 26 - Amusing day-in-the-life type story. Geoff goes out by making his most personal character the focus of his last issue. Slight confusion: in the picture Jakeem gives Courtney, who’s the black-haired character on the far left of the picture? Judomaster out of costumer?
Booster Gold # 19 - Nice discussion about time travel issues, but nothing much happening here. Michelle disappearing was more of a hold-over from last issue.
My comics shop once again missed me on GL; this is getting annoying.
L3W was nice, but would have been better had there not been an unreasonable delay, and had the focus actually been on the LSH and LSV. Both of 'em have been all but sidelined by guest starring heroes and villain. And while I like those characters (or, dislike, as appropriate), I wanted a Legion book. Heck, even Superman was all but a bystander.
I know Johns has a continuity-fix fetish, and normally I like it, but this has turned into one continuity-fix after another, with a side dish of showcasing some of Johns other favorites like the GLs. That’s all crowded out the actual story – there hasn’t been one hint of how Kal thinks they’re going to reform Supertwit.
Flash #1 - another parade of Johns favorite characters… Kid Flash, the JSA, GL Hal… I’m seeing a pattern here. Looks like the start of an interesting storyline, but right now I’m afraid it’s just going to redefine the Speed Force yet again as a continuity-fix.
Oddly, over in JSA I thought Johns handles all his favorite characters beautifully. Really, really liked this one. And though I’m sad about Johns leaving the title, I still added it to my pull list.
… which, of course, means I won’t be getting copies of JSA either, along with not getting copies of GL. grumbles
I’m feeling the same way. As much as I’m enjoying the gorgeous Perez art and some of John’s stuff (the “Stuff It Grandpa” legion is apparently Earth-Prime since their Element Lad’s green K affected Prime), I wanted a Legion story, not a Young Justice reunion. And dammit, if they were gonna bring Bart back, why not bring him back as Impulse from back when he had a personality?
They DID undo the extra aging Bart got in Infinite Crisis - he’s back to Kid Flash mode, where he had a personality. Taking him back to Impulse would take another few years off of his age and really screw with his interactions with his former Titans teammates down the line.
I am 100% happy with Lo3W #4 except maybe that last page reveal. I need to know more.
And I suppose I could have done without the deaths.
Yeah, that last page reveal has the potentially to seriously uncool up the Time Trapper. The Trapper has always been a rational, cerebral foe of the Legion, albeit overly prone to Xanatos gambits. Really will not be happy if next issue he’s trading punches and throwing tantrums and having snit fits.
