World War Hulk launches this week, and I was going to skip it, but honestly, I had to know how Hulk vs. Black Bolt played out.
Exiles continues its Claremont-induced suckitude.
New Avengers - I thought last issue was my last of this series, but I picked up one m ore after hints of what happens on the final pages. I hope it’s a harbinger of retcons to come.
New Warriors - I was already picking up two Marvel books not on my pull list, so I decided to snag this one as well. Not too bad.
Green Lantern Corps #13: I really like Mogo’s partner. He’s got spunk, he’s loyal, smart. And he can take down Kilowog *without *using his ring. And man, that’s one way of dealing with a tumor.
Justice #12: Why the hell didn’t I drop this thing? It’s finally limped to an end, at least.
Trials of Shazam #7: Atlas is just awesome. I like this thing, and between it and Countdown I’m eager to see how the Marvel family will end up.
Countdown #46: Demon made of dead babies. It’s won me over. The Mary stuff was just great, and the Rogues feel like the Rogues again.
World War Hulk #1 Big fights with high amounts of collateral damage…it ain’t Shakespeare but I love it.
Countdown #46 I’m buying it for the Rogues and nothing more.
DMZ #20 The new art will take some getting used to but this is a consistently excellent book.
New Avengers #31 I did NOT see that coming.
Cable & Deadpool I’ve not been a big fan of this latest storyline but no other book makes me laugh like this one does. And Bob, Agent of Hydra is the best new character of the year.
Trials of Shazam#7 - Well, I’m glad somebody is enjoying this, because… I just can’t stand it. The plot is dull and formulaic, and the twist of modernizing the gods of magic isn’t enough to save it from tedium. I’m basically just hanging in to see how it’ll affect continuity, but Mary Black Marvel over in Countdown is scads more interesting – in much less time (and with erratic writing, too).
Green Lantern Corps#13 - I thought this was heading for a tie-in to the upcoming Sinestro Corps storyline; I wouldn’t be surprised if it did] end up tied in, but I’m surprised they didn’t do so in this episode. The bigger cast is being juggled quite well, too.
Countdown#46 - Reading this is like driving along in a car with square wheels… as it bangs and lurches along its way, you’re getting somewhere, but the ride isn’t as much fun as it is something to talk about with others. The writing and the art is just all over the place on this – last issue the Rogues had zippy dialogue, this issue not so much. At least the incredibly dull Monitors storyline got sidelined into the Jason/Donna storyline this time.
As much as everbody I know who reads Marvel has been complaining… is it really that bad a thing if they take the coward’s way out and hit that reset button? I mean, it’ll all be over then, and back to the stories that people don’t complain (as much) about, yes?
I’m glad to see this particular Corps plotline wrapped up. Another issue or two and it would’ve outstayed its welcome.
I liked Justice, though, and felt the two organizational cameos at the end were very welcome. And how can you know love the Joker’s rendition of Dracula?
I am digging Trials. Though I didn’t care for Hercules’s cop-out. It’s not like Freddy could’ve stopped her.
Based on the New Avengers and other Marvel spoilers… I have speculation.
Skrull replacements - some of the New Warriors who died at Stamford. Thrash is a good candidate, based on the end of New Warriors #1, but that may change. Reed Richards - I’d love to have something to explain his out of character behavior during Civil War, which goes beyond the cute social mathematics theory thing. She-Hulk - based on an upcoming issue of the title, I think the real Shulkie is still on the loose, but that there may have also been a fake. Miriam Sharpe and Maria Hill are popular speculative candidates online right now, too…
They didn’t have to lift it from that title; it’s standard generic comic book plot #2 (as in FF #2, Avengers #2, Spider-Man #2…).
I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high though. One highly over used plot twist does not a reset button make.
And as long as I’m posting in this thread I have to wonder if having certain major Marvel characters act as complete jerks and idiots for the past two years was in part an excuse to get fans cheering for the Hulk when he turns up and rubs their noses in it. In the past few months some comics have come out featuring the obvious fan complaints about Civil War put into the mouth of the title character (She-Hulk and Nova come to mind immediately). It makes me think that this has been an orchestrated break down of certain sacrificial heroes before having the big action sequence and then returning things to the status quo. I mean, is there anyone out there reading Marvel comics who isn’t rooting for the Hulk to tear down the badly written hypocrites?
Green Arrow - Trying to build suspense on something that’s been hyped to high heaven for months is kind of silly, but, if it weren’t hyped to high heaven, the last page would have been a good solid ending to the issue. As to the other non-violent plot to the issue…Well played, Team Queen, well played.
Exiles - Actually starting to improve, but I swear, someone needs to slap Claremont with a stack of Spider-Man 2099. Miguel isn’t freakin’ Peter. Stop trying to make him into him! Artist also needs to be given some reference sheets for…pretty much everyone. The Bugs were completely wrong (although at least Claremont’s stopped calling the top caste Lizards), Sabretooth looks more like Jack of Fables…well, OK, Morph, Blink, Longshot and Psylocke were OK, and Miguel’s only problem was looking too Peter-ish, but, still…reference sheets, man.
