I don’t get to pick up my books until this evening, but here it is.
Sinestro Corps Special #1: Holy crap. We’re all boned. The Sinestro Corps was scare enough when it was merely a bunch of yellow ring slingers. But now with *Two *evil Supermen (one of them pre-crisis, no less, Manhunters, a possessed Kyle, and no less than the frigging Anti-Monitor they’re pants-wettingly scary. This is gonna rock so hard.
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #31: The elected leader is the worst choice possible. Give that this election was by popular vote by minors, it’s also incredibly realistic. And hey! Two old Legionaries reappear! The plot’s a bit muddled and the art practically defines “meh”, but I’m willing to give it a shot. The only thing that’s at all modest about Supergirl’s current costume is the neckline. So of course the cover draws her at an angle so that we’re looking directly down her top, the only was to see cleavage there. And her face is kinda screwy.
Countdown #44: Is the fact that I’m still holding out that this book foolish optimism? Only the Rogues plot really moved me this issue, and unlike 52 it hasn’t really earned enough credit to carry it through the slower issues. As I said before, the Rogues scene was the only part that worked for me, and even there it feels like we missed a scene. I could buy that both Piper and Trickster would be horrified by the killing and immediately know that they couldn’t go back to the other Rogues, but it doesn’t feel like Piper and Trickster would know to stick together at this point.
**Teen Titans #48: ** Cassie is a moron. I mean, really, really stupid. Kara doesn’t even have the excuse of having her mom been kidnapped,a nd still goes along with Cassie’s idiocy, making her even dumber. The US military and government’s pretty dumb too. Oh, and Hippolyta’s plan is incomprehensible, and the Amazon’s are stupid for not bumping her off yet. So yeah. Everyone’s an idiot in this book.
Blue Beetle #16: Ooh. Traci 13, back from Limbo. And the reveal of Jaime’s darkest desires was hilarious.
Let’s just say I agree with Menocchio, 'k? That way I don’t have to re-type all that.
… except for the Sinestro Corps stuff. Because that was the “good comic that my comic store gets a week late” for this week. grr.
Except Robin. He was trained by the world’s greatest detective, after all.
Y’know… In case nobody’s mentioned it lately.
Yeah, but he seemed so…*unprepared!
*
Wait… Robin was in Teen Titans? Y’all sure? 'Cause I don’t remember him in there actually, you know, doing anything.
There was some whiny emo guy in a pumpkin-orange jumpsuit. But that wasn’t Robin.
Blue Beetle is awesome. And it looks like Traci was trained by the ghosts of Sue and Ralph. I hope she sticks around.
Countdown 44. Okay, so when the Atomic Knights put Captain Atom in that armor I remember thinking it looked exactly like the Monarch armor. So, is that Cap now calling himself Monarch or are there two of them? I’m thinking the latter at the moment.
So far Jimmy has shown the powers of Plastic Man (Elastic Lad), Flash (XS or Tornado Twins) and…Porcupine Pete?!? Is there some sort of Legion thing going on here?
I thought the introduction of possessed Kyle was pointless. It felt like they didn’t know what to do with him, so they just threw a wrongly-colored costume on him so they could use him in this. That being said, we are are really boned. I’m not sure the Corps can win this time without outside help.
Also, where the heck has John Stewart been?
My early guess is that (spoilered since it features spoilers for this weeks Sinestro Corps)…
Kyle is not actually possessed. He’s got Parallax contained and is going to be playing double agent.
Things are bad but not as bad as it seems. I’d give any highly skilled ring slinger (team Sector 2814, Kilowog, ect.) even odds against any of the core group other than Superboy-Prime and even he could be taken down with a good team effort. They do have a great line up of villains, though.
I hope they’re planning on using the Sinestro Corps as long term GL villains. Sure it’s essentially extending Sinestro’s gimmick to a bunch of guys but it’s got potential for some interesting fun beyond the first storyline.
Waaay back in the days when Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen had his own comic series, one of the gimmicks the writers used along with talking apes and robot babes who could speak Viking, was to give Jimmy superpowers, and then take them away again by the end of the book. Those’re all powers Jimmy had at various points in pre-Crisis continuity.
Of course, IIRC at one point Jimmy did get honorary status in the LSH – much like Lana “Insect Queen” Lang – and I think he had some ersatz powers at the time, too. So there might actually be some Legion thing going on, too.
He used his Elastic Lad powers whenever he was on honorary legion status. I don’t remember any story where he had either super speed or quills, but then I haven’t read all the “super powered Jimmy” stories either.
Jimmy had super speed in 1956, according to Wikipedia, though it doesn’t reference the specific book in which it appeared.
He had the porcupine powers in Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #65, which is from 1962 - 12 years before Pete.
Okay, so what we’re seeing here is a rehash of old bits of Pre-crisis continuity. Perhaps Jimmy is somehow experiencing things that are happening to his counterparts in the other 51 universes?
A variation of this theory is that there are 52 universes and only one Jimmy. All of his pre-crisis knowledge and abilities got folded into New Earth Jimmy.
As long as I’m here…
Blue Beetle: Why aren’t you reading this book?! At least two BWA HA HAs per issue–usually more.
She-Hulk: Very cool.
Sinestro Corps: Hell yes.
Countdown: Improving.
I picked up :
World War Hulk : X-Men; X-Factor; She-Hulk; Fantastic Four; Superman/Batman; JSA Classified; Blue Beetle; Wonder Woman; Teen Titans; Amazons Attack; Legion; Sinestro Corps; Countdown; Invincible; Jack of Fables.
Favorite book this week : Blue Beetle, easily.
He’s been on Earth, putting on some kind of news program called, “The Daily Show.” It’s an obvious front.
Line of week has to be from WWH: Xmen
Hulk: Xavier, you’re walking. (beat) I can fix that.
I preferred Santo’s response to being delimbed.
Or just about any panel of Blue Beetle, really.
I liked Blue Beetle a lot too. That and Sinestro Corps were my favorites this week.
