52 Week 13: Geeze. Talk about kicking a man when he’s down. Now, I’m not an EM fan. I don’t believe that I’ve ever read an EM solo story in my life, and he’s not my fave even in a supporting role, but I really, really hope they’ve got something planned for him. I mean, he just broke through rock bottom and discovered some whole new strata right here.
Which isn’t to suggest that I’m not entertained by his torment.
Jonah Hex #10: This comic is so up and down. But when it’s on, it’s on. Yeah, it’s one note, but really, it sometimes seems that there’s an endless number of ways to present western-flavored badassery.
Detective Comics #822: Love. And hey, Dini snuck an animated villain into canon. Even if it is only Roxy Rocket. Like the new role for the Riddler. Batman could use an intellectual rival who’s not exactly outright evil (like the Red Hood), but isn’t just misunderstood (like Huntress). Hope this sticks.
The All-New Atom #2: The art’s ho-hum, but the characters and situation and fun enough to stick around. The villains are so deliciously bizarre. They deserve a visual design to match. Wonder who the man in the shadows is. I assumed it was Ray in Brave New World. But that seems doubtful now.
Y the Last Man #48: They’ve been retty heavy on the flashback recently, haven’t they? And disappointgly, they really haven’t given us anything new. Although this did suceed in making Alter slightly less of a pure villain.
This cribbed the plot of a SF short story I read in high school, about a bunch of people who wait and wait in a barn for a UFO to show up and take them to the stars. From these particular writers, I expect more.
Not a whole lot going on for me.
New Excalibur - The Black Knight shows up and hints of Cross time hijinks to come. Glad to see they’ve kept the same sensibilities as in the old Excalibur series.
Fantastic Four 539 - This is the biggie. Yancey Street. Death. The Mad Thinker. And the big, spoiler box deserving ending…Ben Grimm decides not to take a side and opts to leave the country. Rumor has it that the Vancouver Canucks are eyeing him as a replacement for Bertuzzi. It’s about time this whole Civil War mess resulted in a good issue.
The new Usagi Yojimbo has no regular characters, nor Usagi himself, anywhere in the book.
But the characters who do appear are driven by Destiny & Tragedy. Soon, the Bodyguard Rabbit will be drawn into conflict with the League of Assassins once again.
Also, Men Of Mystery #59 reprints more Golden Age goodies from the 1940s, with the cover featuring Doll Man. Kid Eternity, T-Man, Lady Luck & Manhunter all feature in this collection as well.
In addition to the profoundly creepy 52, I got…
Ex Machina. Invincible. Amazing Spider-Man. Fantastic Four. Annihilation : Nova. Outsiders. Detective. Atom. PS238.
Looks like our own CandidGamera got called on by Marvel’s EIC Congrats, CG!
Hey, neat! If that is you, nice!
Congrats on the BS non-answer, CandidGamera! You tried!
Quesada not wanting to give away the story to an upcoming book is BS?
No, denying that Reed has a brain tumor or is under some kind of mind control. Unless their brave new direction is “some of our former heroes are crazy now, and can never ever be friends with the other guys again.” Regardless, I’ve quit reading Civil War and its various tie-ins for reasons that have been discussed to death in these threads.
Suit yourself.
I personally don’t find it a sign of mental deficiency to (1) train heroes to use their powers safely and effectively, and (2) put some oversight on their activities so that when things go wrong, they are held accountable.
So the overtures that Iron Man, Richards et al are “bad guys” or “mind controlled” just don’t hold water to me. That’s just my perspective.
I think the issue is more with Reed acting more like an ass than ever. The FF are a family first and foremost. Reed unable to be bothered with the welfare of his brother-in-law who was savagely beaten is out of character, even if his is working on the mysterious 42 thing.
Got it.
The way I read it, Joe was saying that the explanation for his behavior would be examined in FF #540. I didn’t read Quesada saying “This is the way Reed’s always been,” I read “it’s not a sci-fi or fantasy cause, but likely something more real-world that (starts) to explain why Reed’s been acting the way he has.”
I should point out that I was being a little facetious in my initial statement too. I certainly don’t expect Quesada to start offering spoilery information or much in-depth discussion of a storyline in progress.
I dunno that that’s really remarkable…we’ve already got Harley, Mr Freeze’s current origin was taken from TAS, I believe, and Montoya is pretty major right now…over in Superman, they brought in Live Wire just before the jump. DC seems totally happy to plunder the DCAU for the comics universe when they have good ideas.
Yeah, that’s definitely not Ray. Unless Jean’s actions back in ID Crisis drove him completely nutty. Agreed about both the art and story.
Also - ‘Shreödingers Authentic Chinese’…I sense at least 2 jokes there. One of which I feel a little bad laughing about. <_<
Outsiders - Judd, honey…you know how, after the last couple issues I was on the verge of dropping this? After the first few pages, and the last page of this issue? All is forgiven! The stuff in the middle wasn’t remarkable, but the discussion between Brain and Mallah, and the return of Shift ? That’s good stuff.
Indeed I did. I wasn’t wanted a specific spoiler, just an indication as to whether Q thought Reed was acting in character or not. Apparently, the real Fantastic Four died off-camera last year. Ah well.
Maybe the FF are still trapped in hell!
