Weekly Comic Book Discussion for 11-23-05

Busy day for me, hell, busy week,… so I have to be quick. (Spoilers in white text, use cursor to read)

**New Books for 11-23-05 - **

Batgirl #70 - decent follow up to previous issues. Though what Gabrych is doing with Mr. Freeze is pretty interesting, I must admit some impatience. I keep wanting the focus to shift back to Casssandra’s quest for her mother’s identity, which took a bit away from the pleasure of seeing Cassandra cut loose again, and her thoughts as she did so was the best part of the issue for me. It’s been a while.

Captain America Vol 5 #12 - strong and involving, like last issue. I realize Mr. Brubaker might disagree (his sudden use of capitals on the Cap thread in General nearly knocked me off my chair!) but like his Authority Revolution and Sleeper Season 2, this title has been a slow gradual build for me, that earlier on, tried my patience. But I concede, these last two issues have been worth it. The reveal at issues end disappointed me a little. Not that Sam Wilson isn’t welcome, but given that this story involves Cap and Bucky’s wartime exploits coming back to haunt the good Captain, I was kinda’ hoping it would turn out to be Prince Namor, esp. after what Sharon said to Nick about, “if you can reach him”.

Catwoman #48 & #49 DD’s (a friend’s) effusive praise inspired me to give this a try again. I’m glad to say the read was worth it. Selena’s conference with Bruce (what a relief to see him act like his old self), her bait and switch tactics, the cold blooded way Slam’s son is being used by the cops, the parlay between supervillains (which reminds me, in a good way, of Simone’s excellent Villains United) combined to make this a real fun read. Looking forward to what I hope is a serious showdown between Black Mask and Selena soon. (Yeah, this is going back on the pull and hold list). For those who haven’t tried it out yet, check out Woods illustrations. It’s pretty cool stuff.

Daredevil #79. Excellent. (Why do I get the feeling poor Ben Urich ain’t making it through this story arc?) Bendis really outdoes himself here. “The Murdock Papers” is shaping up into a must read, even for those who haven’t been following the storyline.

Local #1 Likewise excellent. I love how Wood ties the personal, that we can all relate to, to the “wind-rewind” storytelling technique in use here. If you liked Demo you should give this a try. It’s like “Run Lola Run” with depth.

Loveless #2 The added depth Azzarello brings to the story this issue is both welcome (I thought this was going to be as simplistic as his “Red Harvest”-revisited Luke Cage story), and intriguing. Can’t ask for much more from a second issue. And cleary Wes is nowhere near as dangerous as his wife.

**Punisher MAX Vol 4 Up Is Down And Black Is White TP ** Damn that was a good read. I want to see more of O’Brien now. Is she still among the living?

Robin #144 a bit of a disappointment given the narrative drive of the Veteran/SpecOps storyline. It’s definitely an editorially mandated digression, and one I find mildly annoying (like the Mr. Freeze subplot in this months Batgirl - something that might be interesting on it’s own, but feels like a unwelcome distraction here. Still it’s good to see that Darla Aquista isn’t going to get deep sixed right away. Like poor Stephanie Brown, the girl deserves better. And this may well be a necessary tactic to maintain the integrity of the main storyline. Still I’ll be glad when this (hopefully) gets back on track.

By the time I got to Seven Soldiers Zatanna #4 I was a bit burnt out, so I didn’t really give this issue the concentrattion that was due. I def. have to re-read it. But I gotta’s say, Sook gives us the sexiest Zatanna I’ve seen since her appearances in Moore’s Swamp Thing, opposite John Constantine. (Whereas her recent appearances in JLA have been the most dramatic. I want to see her join WW’s & Supergirl’s Lesbian Legion of Unrepentant Asskickers in the DCU to come (esp. if Superman and Batman don’t shake off their Crisis mandated doldrums anytime soon).

I keep thinking I forgot something. Well, there’s always tomorrow.

Frankenstein #1: Fascinating. The closest to the literary monster’s character I’ve ever seen outside of the novel, but Morrison isn’t using any of the usual themes attatched to him, like science gone wrong or the responsibilities of creation. Frankenstein’s monster as a quasi-divine (or infernal) agent of wrath. I like it.

Zatanna #4: There it is! I heard it was held up because of tiesto Infinite Crisis. Besides some oblique references to the mind-wipe stuff, I don’t see any. Anyone? Besides that, I don’t quite understand this one yet. I’ll have to give it another read through.

Flash #229: Improved from last month, but I still get the impression that they’re treading water until the Infinite Crisis revamp. Also, it seems that becoming a dad has made Wally quite stupid.

Busy day for me, hell, busy week,… so I have to be quick…I keep thinking I forgot something. Well, there’s always tomorrow.

Now I remember,… I bought Uncanny X-Men #466 for the art. (I’ve been far too out of touch with Claremont’s Xbooks to even begin to follow the story.) T’wasn’t quite Bachalo’s best, but I like how his work on this title over the last few issues recalls both his Vertigo work (though with a far thicker inked line) and his work on the Ult. Xmen, without getting so awash in black ink I cannot tell what’s going on. And as ever, the girls are cute.

Anyone care to comment on the story?

… So, anyone wondering if Kal-L has something stuck under his cape?

Frankenstein was awesome. But I was confused by the train derailment sequence until I realized that the “1955” banner was in the wrong panel–it should be in panel four. We’re seeing the 1870 train crash intercut with scenes of the site’s subsequent development; a very cinematic effect. With the misplaced banner, I thought at first that we were supposed to be seeing some kind of recurring crash.

JSA Classified # 5 - Nice set-up for a caper story. A good real first story for this book…coming off a disappointing four-parter which took four issues to tell us that Psycho-Pirate remembers the Crisis.

Legion # 12 - NOT THERE! This is the one I had been looking forward to, and it’s been delayed possibly even more than till next week! Blast it, DC, don’t do this to us!

It was pretty good… I’ve always liked Rachel. Pretty much all of the story comes out of recent Decimation stuff, so there’s still a fair number of plot points to be resolved.

Oh yeah, Claremont and Bachalo’s Uncanny Xmen (for the art, which I’m glad to say, is read-a-ble, unlike some of Bachalo’s previous non-Vertigo work, like his Ult. Xmen, Generation X and Steampunk which were difficult to read) and She Hulk #2 neither of which I’ve had time to read, with Thanksgiving guests and all,…

Thanks for getting it started, WonK.

Flash - Well, it’s nice to see Vandal Savage. I wonder about Nightwing’s portrayal here - and what’s with the “flash” to “Mr. Allen” in the asylum?

Nightwing - Wonderful arc, wonderful book. Really enjoying it.

JSA Classified - Yes. I love the camaraderie amongst the villains here. Good stuff.

Invincible - Still the best superhero solo book around.

Conan - Conclusion of a storyline and my collection of the title.

Red Sonja - Interesting. I’m giving it a while longer.

SS : Zatanna - Not bad, not bad. The ending was a bit cliched, I felt, but I enjoyed the ride. The Infinite Crisis issue, I suspect, was :

Zor’s revelation that he humbled the Spectre.

SS : Frankenstein - My new favorite Seven Soldiers tie-in. This one rocks. This is the appropriate level of Morrison zaniness.

Amazing Spider-Man #525

Pete gets his fricking left eye gouged out — and EATEN by the vampiric Molun guy!!! And then gets beaten into hamburger on the pavement!!

I’m guessing they won’t be optioning this story arc for the next movie

She-Hulk was excellent this week; Young Avengers and Ex Machina continue to impress as well.

Just read SS: Frankenstein quickly this morning. Menocchio’s got something with the idea that this Frankenstein appears more closely related to Shelley’s original. Biffy, thanks for the note on the train crash page; I was similarly fooled.

SS: Zatanna #4: One thing about Morrison is that he’s known to revisit a theme or two. And yet, as many times as he’s broken the fourth wall, he gets me every time. It took me a long time to turn away from the page where Zee reached out for my hand because I wanted to be ready to help.

Haven’t read Ex Machina yet.

Oh, Candid, I’d be surprised as your spoiler guess for the rework consistent with Inf-Crisis is correct, seeing as that event actually occured in More Fun Comics #55 (1940).

Really? Hmm. I must confess to ignorance as to Zor’s pedigree in comics.

I can’t think of anything else that might be Infinite Crisis material.

I’ve heard rumors that the Time Tailors are somehow relevant. Like they’ll be the ones putting everything back together again.

It’s Morrison, so it may be true only on a cosmic metaphorical level.
