Weekly Comic Book Thread 10/19

Here 'Tis. A big week for me, seeing as my store got in most of the stuff I was supposed to get last week.

JLA #120: Oh, that Ollie. He’s such a hothead. Yet I love him so.

Green Lantern Corps Recharge #2: I like the cosmic police procedural vibe elements of this book have. And Mogo’s always cool.

Wonder Woman #221: A bit of emotional depth added to Brother I here. While bitchy and insane, I can’t help but feel a bit sorry for the thing.

Villains United #6: Wow. So, I was sorta right in my prediction for Mockingbird. So I get partial credit, right?
Actually, I had noticed that there were discrepancies between the Battlesuit-wearing Lex (who we now know to be the “real” Lex, and Mockingbird) skulking in teh shadows in Teen Titans and Superman/Batman and the more genial Lex of Villains United. I was more than willing to write that off as just slight variations in interpreations between Gail Simone and Loeb and Johns, but it actually having an explanation is even better!

Oh, and as a fan of the Post-CoIE Superboy from way back, I was surprised to see Knockout as Scandal’s lover, but it’s also perfectly in character.
Easily the strongest of the Countdown miniseries.

Y: The Last Man #38: Well, looks like it’s 355’s turn to act like a total idiot.

Klarion #4: “All those hot Puritan Girls”. Marvelous.

Batman #646: C’mon man. Pay off already! Jeeze. Okay, there’s some movement on the plot, and I appreciate it, but just throw down already.

Birds of Prey #87: Wonderful character work on Oracle’s opposite number.

Haven’t read most of this week’s crop, yet…

What I have read:

Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos #1 - Better than I expected, which isn’t actually saying much since I had very low expectations. (Mostly because I didn’t realise Giffen was writing it until I’d gotten the issue.) But it actually turned out pretty good. Hopefully, with introductions out of the way, we can get more actual story next month. I’m not sure why it’s called Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos when Nick’s not actually the one riding herd on the Creatu…er…Howling Commandos.

I picked up IDW’s Transformers #0 and was duly impressed. The new human protagonists are actually somewhat interesting. I hope they do not become as lame as others have in the presence of our beloved giant alien robots. Speaking of said 'bots, we get to see just a few of 'em. They have new alt-modes, which is fitting given that they’ve only been here for a bit over 2 years. I also enjoyed the interview with Furman at the end. I hope he’s able to pull off whatever it is he has planned.

Can you tell me the cast of the new Transformers comic? I could never get into any the Dreamwave stuff – they felt like bad fanfics with pretty computerized coloring.

Klarion - not a bad wrap-up. Another chapter of Seven Soldiers over, thank goodness.

Conan - Dropping this with next issue - it’s nice, but I just can’t muster quite enough interest to keep buying. In it’s place, I’m adding Nightwing to my pull list officially, because it’s been firing on all cylinders lately.

Birds of Prey - Love the background on Calculator.

Manhunter - An interlude story detailing the back history of Kate’s arsenal - it seems her gloves are Azrael-Batman’s; Her staff belonged to the false Manhunter killed in South America along with Peacemaker, Wildcat II, and the rest, by Eclipso; and her suit belonged to a Darkstar. Great jumping-on point.

GL Corps : Recharge - I always sort my books first to last, worst to best, and I sorted this to the back because I expected great things. And I was not disappointed. Gardner’s line about Mogo wanting to Socialize… heh.

Superman - Lois and Clark having trust issues, Lois attacked by an OMAC… fun stuff.

I don’t have my comic with me, but I’ll tell ya what I can recall.

Verity: tech-savvy teenage drifter and pickpocket
O’Nion (oh-NY-ohn): Shaggy-esque conspiracy theorist who drives a VW microbus
Rachet
Thundercracker
Starscream
Runabout
Runamuck
Onslaught? (cameo)

Also: #0 is $0.99, cheap! The 6-issue series begins in January as** Transformers: Infiltration** with a $2.99 cover price.

New books for 10-19-05:

Endings & Beginnings:

Authority Revolution #12 The suspense dissipated a bit too quickly this issue, when Jenny (I love writing that) Quantum and Angie the Engineer,…

managed to put down the Midnighter,…

… and the remainder of the story felt a bit anti-climatic, even when we lost the first carrier – a moment that should have felt like the first time we saw the USS Enterprise go down in the first Star Trek feature - Rose attacked Jenny (she got out of that too easily) and
the Midnighter pulled out Bendix’ spine.
. I am sorry to say that I really think Dustin Nguyen should have found a way to make these moments more visually exciting. Still, it was a decent ending to the “Eternal Return”, and I’m glad I hung on for the whole ride. Thank you Mr. Brubaker! 6/10.

She Hulk #1 Welcome Back Slott AND Bobillo! Together they deliver the first meaty read of the week, quickly re-establishing Jen Walters, her world, and throwing in her perspective on the disasters that befell the old Avengers before House of M. Good efficient, dense set up, leavened with plenty of wry humor. I’ll be amazed if Jen doesn’t get…

disbarred though

… before this story arc is over. Low key as the close is, she’s taking some awful risks…

for a legal professional.

7/10.

Batbooks

Batgirl #69 restored my faith in this title. Gabrych makes us feel Cassandra Cain’s frustration: Shiva or Nyssa, who is her mother? Of course he doesn’t tell us anything conclusive, not yet. He also does a great job reminding us of how vulnerable the proud Cassandra is to the temptations of the martial artist’s life of hard training and combat. Shiva appeals to her spirit, Nyssa works on her ideals. I was relieved to see that Nyssa and plans to…

freeze the world’s oil reserves

… As “old hat” as might sound, it makes far more sense than the Society’s plans to “mindwipe” all the super-heroes (as alluded to in other titles. If the Society is going to go through THAT much bother, why not simply kill them all?) Pop Mhan’s work looks better when he isn’t finishing Ale Garza’s layouts, particularly when it comes to lending Cass and Nyssa an expressive quality that’s been missing from this title as of late. This is particularly helpful in bringing Nyssa to life, when she taunts Cassandra and tries to bring Cass over to her side. (The issue ends with a truly unexpected plot twist. This issue is a must for fans of the tragic Dr. Victor Fries.) Best of the Week. 8/10.

After the long dull pause in the action that was last month’s issue, Judd Winnick finally picks up the pace again iin Batman #646. Having decimated the Black Mask’s criminal organization (and putting his former mentor through his paces), good ol’ Frank Cast,… I mean Jason Todd focuses on the crime lord himself, inadvertently driving him into the arms of the Society. The issue ends with a great set up for the next issue: I’m looking forward to a big donnybrook next time around (decompression be damned). As for the art, I do miss Doug Manhke’s work on this title. Shane Davis’ work reminds me of Matthew Clark’s on Winnick’s Outsiders, in both it’s strengths and weaknesses. I guess Winnick likes working with Jim Lee imitators. 6/10. (The score would have been higher, but for the art.)

G_dd@mmit! My LCS didn’t get their shipment of Birds Of Prey #87 from Diamond this week! (Anyone else run into this problem?) After last week’s issues of Villains United and Hawkman I was really looking forward to some more of Simone’s and Bennett’s storytelling this week.

**Robin #143 ** Willingham does a great job integrating on-going elements of his Robin storylines (the Veteran and his special forces team, Johnny Warlock’s vendetta, even the return of the Rising Sun Archer – Yay! – and the Tarantula – how did she get out of prison? – into the editorially mandated OMAC storyline this issue. We even get to see some guests from Days of Vengeance. A decent read all around, if not quite up to the standard of the last few issues. Let the battle for Bludhaven begin! 7/10

Other Titles:

Supreme Power Hyperion #2 – Nice Deodato cover. JMS comes up with an interesting way to introduce a myriad of possibilities for Hyperion’s future, and the notion of multiverses into the Supreme Power Universe. We also get tantalizing hints of something I’ve been waiting for, a glimpse at JMS’ take on the conflict Gruenwald described between…

Nighthawk and Hyperion, and those infected by the nano-virus

… years ago. 6/10.

Ultimate Spider-Man #84, the sixth installment in the “Warriors” story arc was fun if unexceptional. I wish we had been given more time to get to know, and care about more of the participants, ‘cause for now, there is very little tying me into this particular story. One more issue to go and this one’s over. 5/10.

Ultimate FF #24 - Glad to see the Zombie FF is still around, locked up. Interested to see where that goes - this ish kicks off the Ultimate Namor storyline.

Captain Atom : Armageddon #1 (of 9) - I have much love for the Wildstorm universe these days, and its nice to see Captian Atom as a big fish for a change.

Justice #2 - Alex Ross painted glory continues with an excellent Riddler-centric issue.

She-Hulk #1 - More of the same, but that’s a good thing.

The Authority : Revolution #12 - Good wrap-up. Sorry to see the change of the Doctors in this miniseries, but I can live with it.

Firestorm #15-6 and #18: Hey, it did get better! Kinda reminds me of early-middle Kyle era GL. That’s a good thing.

Birds of Prey #87: Calculator coolness.

Guess he’s in contact with both Lexes. Wonder if he knows. Wonder which Lex had his doctors killed.

She-Hulk #1: Guess who’s back. Back again. Nice throwback to the first issue of the first volume in the first two frames of this one. Loved the bit with the TPBs and the anime-boomerangs.

About time she and Pugsy got together. Wonder what happened to Rocket Man.

Wait…isn’t that coming out next month?

Was just talking about it elsewhere and wishing it were out already…

GL Corps: Recharge #2: Neat. The art was a bit off though. Nice seeing Mogo and Alex again. Happy they went with the redheaded version rather than the blond. She’s no Circle of Fire Alex though. “Mogo wants to socialize.” Tee hee.

CHEAP?!

THE FIrst comic I ever bought on cost $0.75! THAT WAS like '88. DUDe what the hell happened!

Hell, the first comic I ever bought (a Superboy special c. 1968) cost me a whole frickin’ quarter!

Either it’s out, or I’m having some very vivid hallucinations.

Yeah, but have you seen the cover price of MAD lately? “Cheap!” my ass! :frowning:

Want to post, no time, more later

However, what Dan Slott told me was the opening scene of She Hulk… wasn’t. It might be the opening of #2, though, from the setup.

This week I got:

Spider-Man/Human Torch: I’m With Stupid TPB by Dan Slott and Ty Templeton (from a trade) - solid superhero storytelling, but not as funny or self-referential as Slott’s She-Hulk.

Sandman: World’s End and The Kindly Ones TPBs - each 50% off cover price - not bad, considering I just sold my singles on eBay recently. Now all I need is to find Brief Lives and The Wake at a similar discount!

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 2 TPB - marked down to $4, how could I refuse? I read the first miniseries and sold it for a HUGE profit when the movie came out. It was okay, but I didn’t like it as much as everyone else did, particularly for the crude, scratchy Kevin O’Neill art.

Love and Rockets: Palomar hardcover - I’ve never read Love and Rockets, but always heard great things about it – especially from critics and “literary” types who usually don’t go for the superhero stuff. I am excited because I just got the oversized hardcover collection of Palomar, all of Gilbert Hernandez’s Love and Rockets stories, a $40 cover price book, for $4. I look forward to reading this one, but it is huge!

Also picked up a few DC Direct figures that I may keep, but I’ll most likely trade or sell - Enemy Ace in the deluxe box set, and First Appearance Hawkman.

For whatever it’s worth, I’ve got a summary/synopsis of Transformers #0 on my web site.

Well, I’ll be…I managed to find it.

Wonder why I thought it was next month…

Interresting book. I’m out of the Wildstorm loop, though.

Majestic’s subjects? People are afraid of Superheroes? What’s happening? Why do I suspect the Authority has something to do with this (I haven’t read them since the MA book started)?
