Weekly Comic Book Thread 9/20/06

Well folks. It’s the moment you’ve all been [del]dreading[/del] waiting for. Civil War #4 has been released. Who dies? What’s up with Thor?

I’ll warn you. It’s kind of stupid. Brief pause for station identification and mouse over.
Thor’s a clone. :smack: Tony Stark held on to a hair for decades (just in case I guess) and cloned a god. :smack:

Also, the predicted blackrifice is made as Black Goliath gets a drive-through placed in his abdomen by Thorclone. Makes one wonder how the clone managed to be worthy enough to pick up the hammer in the first place.

Sue and Johnny Storm leave the Fantastic Four to join the rebels. Reed Richards and Captain America continue to act wildly out of character. Spider Man begins to kinda sorta have some really weak doubts though I’m sure they’ll be fleshed out by a better writer in the next Amazing Spider Man.

Lastly, Reed Richards and the Wasp release a group of villains to hunt down the rebels including Jack O’Lantern, Lady Deathstrike, the Taskmaster, Venom, Bullseye, and two others I don’t recognize likely due to their high success rate against heroes.
All in all, this is one of the dumbest things I have ever read. Truly a new low, even for this title.

**Harborwolf **–Devil’s Due Comics has an offer. If you are fed up with a Crisis/52/Civil War comic from the Big 2, you can mail it, or the cover, to Devil’s Due, & they will send you one of their titles, free.

Give it a shot.

Unless they reveal that this whole thing was due to some kind of outside mind control, how the hell do they plan to rehabilitate Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic?

This is probably the worst abuse of a major character since Hal Jordan went 'round the bend, and we weren’t expected to follow him in a monthly title afterwards! And then it took DC two crossovers and a yellow demon to get him readable again. If I was expected to write Iron Man or Fantastic Four, I’d be hopping mad.

This does not have make me look forward to my bi-weekly shipment. Talk about the cure being far worse than the disease. Someone needs to be taken out back and beaten and this process should be repeated until they stop breaking their characters.

So do you think one of the

“new” heros will be a cloned Giant-Man…?

Now THAT would be something to put the final nail in Stark/Fantastic…even if they’re being mischaracterized.

It was fairly awful.

Clones…for the love of pete!

Also, it WASN"T MJOLNIR. If you look near the last page you will see one of the shield techs working on the hammer. He opens it up and works on the wires inside.

Well they’ve made the pro-reg side the bad guys. No surprise there. All in all, very weak.

One is definitely Songbird. I think the other is Jester.

I feel so left out in these discussions, lately…I don’t read Civil War, and the only Marvel book I read with even a tangential connection to it is Eternals…

Anyhow…

Nextwave - Book’s been saved from my drop list. This is the best issue since issue 1. (Not hard to be better than the last 3 issues, though, the steady decline among the first three seriously accelerated in 4-6.)

BoP - ‘I’m the damn Batgirl!’ Priceless. ‘Batgirl’ need to hire herself a writer. Her dialogue was hillariously awful. Gonna be interesting finding out who she is. But I bet a lot of people are going to be pissed it’s not Barbara, or Cassie. (Of course, a lot of those people are probably still too busy bitching about Cassie being called ‘mopey’ when this new Batgirl first showed up.)

52 - EMERALD HEAD OF EKRON! On top of being a delightfully silly idea, it reintroduces the idea that there are two Emerald Eyes, from near the end of Giffen’s time on LoSH. Lobo’s rebirth was fun, too.

Thanks for kicking it off - haven’t gotten to read mine yet, though. Did peek at Civil War. I’m just glad it wasn’t Hercules.

Deadman - I really don’t know what’s going on, but I’m enjoying the ride. At least as well as I can enjoy anything that requires as much thought to figure out as this does. Being sick is teh suck.

Superman #656: I liked the building of the Callie character, as well as insights into the mysterious “Super-Boy” of Clark’s past. Subjekt underwhelmed me, but Arion came through with the save!

The Flash The Fastest Man Alive #4: It’s won me over. Partially because it’s less mopey than the first two issues, and partially because I’ve accepted that the Bart I knew is dead, and I should treat this as a new character. Who works, pretty much.

Birds of Prey #98: “You have cobwebs in inappropriate areas”. Me-ow. Also, I’m betting it’s Bat-Mite. Is Simone the first pro to riff on the “Goddamn Batman” meme? I would have bet it was her.

52 Week 20: I had just assumed Ekron was a location, but this is just clasic. When Lobo’s off, he’s my least favorite character, but when he’s on, he’s on.

Astonishing X-Men #17: Hmmm… I feel as if I need a primer on Nova. Until this point, “evil telepath” was sufficient. Kitty’s treatment was deliciously twisted, and frieghteningly plausible given Xavier’s track record. I also enjoyed how Logan got his mojo back.

Checkmate #6: I’m not sure what the Squad is trying to pull here. Just don’t mess with Calculator.

To be fair, Tony would have only had one of Thor’s goldilocks for one decade, since the Fantastic Four has only been around for ten years or so, Marvel time.

One more thing…didn’t Thing say he was moving to Canada? His appearance doesn’t make sense even with the recent shipping delays.

The FF issue wherein the Thing makes his announcement takes place either during or immediately after Civil War #4, chronologically.

Ultimate FF shapes up a little this month; Civil War #4 at least gave me Herc hitting Iron Man with a gas tanker, which was immensely satisfying; Exiles concludes the best story arc ever … (Bub! Bub. Bub.) Ion actually improved quite a bit now that they’ve decided to try and make some sense.

Shadowpact - Eh.

The Flash - The “secret” of the Speed Force. The title is shaping up, but… Wally’s not supposed to be in the Speed Force.

Robin - Good arc for the Boy Wonder.

Superman - No complaints…

Birds of Prey - Yeah, I can’t wait for the reveal on this one.

Checkmate - Probably the best of the OYL launches.

52 - Fraggin’ A.

I think Nextwave’s been pretty consistent, but yeah, this one was great, with the Mindless Ones shambling their way into people’s day to day lives. And the opening page of them doing West Side Story down the street was gold.

Nextwave : The book I should be reading, but am not.

I think it would have to take place before Civil War #4. That’s because the Torch was still in the hospital when Ben Grimm made his announcement. In CW#4, the Torch is already up and about.

BTW, I don’t think that Ben ever said he was moving to Canada. He simply said that he was leaving the country.

Can’t. The main event in that FF story is the Anti-Regs freeing the people captured by the Pro-Regs in the battle that spanned Civil War #3 and #4.

In the Emerald Empress’s first appearance, Ekron was presented as a lost civilization on Venegar, the Empress’s homeworld.

I like this version better. <_<

It’s in Ohio, isn’t it?
