The only downside of swimming is that it can make you ravenously hungry afterwards, and you might just eat back all the calories you just burned, and more. Otherwise, it’s arguably the best exercise that there is (I believe the so-called “swimmer’s body” is considered to be the quintessential ideal physique health-wise?)
Back in the 90’s (I think) I recall a Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition being shot at the practice for upcoming Olympic summer games. The female models were asked who were the hottest guys there and I think they unanimously agreed it was the members of the men’s water polo team.
I’ve read that one reason swimming creates more hunger than other activities is due to the body’s reaction to cold. It thinks it’s winter and tries to pack on calories. Perhaps one way to combat the post-swim hunger might be to warm up afterwards in the hot tub or with a hot shower?
Water aerobics is also a good way to workout without too much strain on your joints. Unless you’re already a good swimmer, you might get a better workout with water aerobics. There’s not as much technique or breathing issues to worry about compared to swimming.
Yeah - those calories-burned are a lot lower than you think they ought to be.
BUT, exercise builds muscle - you may weigh the same, but it’s less fat, more lean, and supposedly muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat does.
Me, gotta get off my fat ass and build some muscle. If I didn’t have such bat-wings, my arms would look like sticks.
Walking on the treadmill is a little weird compared to walking but about half my 10k steps were on the treadmill today.
This morning read 239.8 pounds so mild milestone achieved.
My high in December was 261.4.
Holiday weekend, not good for weight loss, but at least I got my steps in.
The little weight gains from things like this are usually easier to get back off, but it will probably set me back a week.
I’ll try to eat much better today.
I still losing, despite attending a wedding yesterday. 237.4lbs.
My steps have been averaging over 10,000, so that is good. Calorie intake is lower but I don’t count.
Anyone else dieting?
I’m sort of dieting. Not counting calories of anything, but certainly working on smaller portions and less really bad stuff. Plus, exercising quite a bit more. Down 11 pounds so far. I’ll be extremely happy (and healthy) if I can get 20 more.
I’m down 25 and another 18 is my first goal, but really need to drop 38 more.
My weight is under 100!
OK, that’s kilograms, not pounds… at 5’11", weighing 100 POUNDS would be pretty bad.
My offiicial loss, per records at their office, is 59 pounds in 9 months.
I tried to do some clothes shopping yesterday and went to the “regular” department versus the “plus” department, for the first time in 20+ years. There are too many damn choices.
I was feeling pretty crummy - my BP is really too low, and I’d grab a few garments, go into a fitting room, and sit for several minutes before trying anything on. I think I scared the clerk when I was checking out, as I was basically resting my elbow on the counter and propping my head up.
So, while I needed more clothing, I gave up after finding 2 pairs of shorts and one dress.
I measured my BP at home yesterday and this morning and it was something like 85/65. At the doctor’s office it was more like 107/70. I’m going to be weaning off the beta blocker starting tomorrow - already on a half tablet a day, so I’ll do that every OTHER day for a week then stop, and see if my head explodes.
Big congrats on the weight loss.
Hopefully the BP gets figured out fast.
In the market for a scale-any recs appreciated. I too am annoyed with inaccuracies and fluctuations in the el cheapo model I have.
Looks like my weight “barometer” is fixed in the 170-175 lb. range-I recently tried to get below 170, and did for a few days, then back up it went…
Ours is a Taylor digital scale. The plate you stand on is some kind of clear glass. IIRC, I bought one in 2010, then about 10 years later it just quit working. It does require batteries; we change them out every year or so. Supposedly, if you move it, you’re supposed to activate it, then step off and let it turn itself off, then step back on and measure your weight. In any case, if I weigh myself multiple times in a row, the reading is always the same.
The technology has definitely improved since we bought that ancient mechanical one (which would have been in the early 1990s).
No loss this week. Damn.
Good step counts and other activities. I guess my calorie intake was up a bit. I have to be more careful and maybe find a better weight burning exercise to add to walking. Actually looks like I missed my steps goal two days. At least yesterday was over 13,000. I’ll try to match today.
Maybe it is time to start adding in sit-ups and other exercises I use to do.
It be gone and it took some friends (> 500 g) along with it. Plus my thighs have slimmed back down. Getting back to the gym and normal (-ish) schedule is better for my health.
However, my doctor notified me that the elevated LDL measured at the doctor’s office was confirmed by the outside lab and I should get tested again in a year.
Because my HDL and triglycerides are both good, plus low BP and improved circulation in my feet (my doctor had prescribed compression socks, but that’s no longer necessary), my overall risk is low. But I think it’s good to try to get my LDL lower via diet. If that’s possible.
So I took another look at what I’m eating. Cottage cheese has a lot of sodium and the one I had was also full fat. As is the yogurt I bought. So I’ll be skipping cottage cheese and switching to a low fat yogurt. I just have to read the labels and make sure I get one that doesn’t have anything I don’t want.
I’m surprised that my cholesterol readings haven’t improved at all, not even the triglycetides.
The BP issues persist. I parked between the bank and the grocery store yesterday. Went to the bank, was going to go to the store and was not feeling good - so I just got back in the car and went home. Later, I had taken a nap, jumped up to go to the bathroom, and my vision grayed. Which has happened my entire life when my BP is good, and I just keep on going.
This time, though, I fell. Never happened before (well, not from blood pressure; frequently from clumsiness).
Today, I walked up a half flight of stairs then half a block to a shop. Spent 5-10 minutes browsing, and had to lean against the counter while checking out. For some reason this alarms clerks!! And I had to sit down twice on the half block walk back to the car.
I need to do some in-person clothes shopping this weekend. I don’t think I will be able to.
I know overall my health must be so much better - but this is more disabling than when I broke my foot!! I’m seriously considering asking for a handicap hangtag.
It really sounds like you’re on the wrong BP meds for you. I would hurry back to the Doc. I remember my father going through a period like that.
So I was afraid I hit a plateau early, but this morning I was down a pound at 236.3.
My wife took today off and we just completed a 3.6 miles walk.
I may not need BP meds at all. I messaged the doctor late Sunday night - got a call yesterday saying doc wanted to see me (tomorrow), and also a message saying I likely ought to quit the second BP med as well. So I haven’t taken either since yesterday morning. Just checked my BP and it’s terrific.
The fall had me pretty spooked. I was researching handicap placards and service dogs, no joke.
I don’t think a service dog would be helpful in my case, since I typically have plenty of warning before I start to gray out. A hangtag might be helpful as we’re travelling, if we go someplace where we need to park and walk some distance, but I HATE the idea. Wouldn’t help with day-to-day stuff, either. I’m just thankful I do not have a commute at the moment - standing on a train or bus might be… regrettable.
Yay on that pound!!
I’m down just under a pound since yesterday - which is likely not real, but indicative of the general downward trend at least.
Today read 234.5 lbs., so down 2 pounds this week. (27 total since Xmas and 11.5 lbs. since I started this thread April 25th and 16 lbs. since April 10th when I started my diet and walking regimen.
I already got in an almost 2 mile walk and I just finished the lawn mowing. So hopefully that and my next walk will counter a probably larger than normal Father’s Day meal.
An unexpected downside to weight loss:
If I spend too much time in a certain small room (which, due to some digestive issues, is frequent), one or both feet may fall asleep. I BROKE one, a couple years back, when I was not careful enough as I stood up.
Well, that’s gotten noticeably worse. I guess I’ve got much less padding to keep from compressing those nerves!!
