Weight Loss for the overweight and obese and good medical news thread

I struggle to simply not GAIN weight and fiber capsules area good way to stop the hunger at snack time,…4 O clock in the afternoon and 9 O clock at night

I’m trying to lose weight again, so far 8 pounds but after bouncing back up to 253 pounds. So 244.5 this morning. My A1C hit 6.6 so just diabetic. I have to get this down.

I’m eating better, thus the weight loss.
I noticed my Fibers Bars (FiberOne) I have for breakfast are too high in Carbs, I’m trying to find one below 25g now.

So my current research project. I might go see a dietician in the next few weeks.

It looks like Atkins Bars might be a good option. the Peanut Butter ones are only 18g.
IQ Bars are only 12g, so could be a great choice. I’m going to order their sampler pack. 7 flavors ranging from 9g to 12g.

Amazon is selling a couple of different at home tests for A1C. I ordered one for $64 that gives results in 5 mins. It is good for 4 tests. At $16 per test, it is cheaper than having a lab do it and much quicker. Hopefully my number has gone down with the weight loss. But I can test again monthly for a little while at least.

Now down to 182. Goal is 178, so I can say I lost 50 pounds.

You’re doing great. Very impressive.

So I managed to screw up the first test yesterday. So now these are $21 tests.

Today the test is working and the result is: 6.3, so I’m just Pre-Diabetic!

I’ll test again in 3-4 weeks.

I sitting at 244.4 pounds so no progress there, but I’m eating better.

I try not to get too hung up on the numbers, but I have to weigh myself every day because I have a tendency towards fluid retention that leads to congestive heart failure. So, I have to keep on top of it. But I’ve lost 70 pounds in a year and a half, and it wasn’t a straight descending line. There were/are lots of plateaus. But over time, the trend is downward.

Keep eating healthily and exercise, and you’ll eventually see results.

An A1C reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months; repeating it any more frequently is a waste of your money.

Not when it I’ve only had 1 test go over 6.5 and I’m doing it cheaply at home.

Holy Cow. My A1C today read only 5.4. That is 2 months into cutting way down on carbs and sweets. The weight is not coming off, but the A1C is down a lot. Hopefully next month’s match this or is better.

So just after returning from France/London I tested at 6.6 which is technically Diabetic, but my blood sugar was still good. Last month was back down to 6.3, keep in mind that was 1 month new diet and 1 month old eating habits and about a month of eating terribly.

Now 2 months of good eating habits and 1 month being the vacation month, I’m the lowest it has been for years.

Water is 8.33 oz per cup or roughly a pint a pound.

I started on Mounjaro 4.5 weeks ago. It happened more suddenly than I thought, I went to see an endocrinologist, she suggested this medicine, I agreed, and she handed me a free sample of 4 (minimum) doses right there (I took the first one in her office), and then ordered a 3 month supply from my pharmacy, which arrived 3 days later by FedEx. I am paying nothing (Medicare plus insurance) because, apparently, I have so many collateral conditions – asthma, osteoarthritis, a tendency towards A-fib – but somebody must be paying big bucks to get FedEx delivery of medicines without me even asking.

I did not weigh myself that morning because I wasn’t expecting to go on the medicine immediately. I weighed myself the next morning, was 286. This morning I was 280.8, so 5.2 pounds lost so far. I’m happy with a pound a week, if it continues for a while. I’m not sure this dosage will be the right one for me, I still get a little hungry sometimes, especially late in the evening. I still crave carbs when I get hungry. Both are manageable. Also the side effects I’ve had are manageable, and I don’t want them to get worse. I’m meeting with the PA in about 4 weeks, so I suppose we’ll have that discussion then.

Congratulations!

Made it to 178, currently in the 172-175 range.

Wow, really great job.

I’m still stuck at 242 lbs. My exercising has been low with the radiation treatments and though I’m over that fatigue, I have to get myself exercising again. My Physical is Friday, so hopefully the lights a fire under my butt.

Impressive. I have stuck at 182 for half a year and have been trying to get back to 175. I know how tough those last few pounds can be. Good work.

This is exactly where I sit, 176-178, down from at least 230 at my peak. I’m still at .5mg Ozempic but my doctor would rather keep me there and still take Metformin and Jardiance for the cardio protection.

My back, hips, and knees certainly feel the difference in weight.

I’ve been on Mounjaro (what a name! I have to think of Mount Kilimanjaro, which for some reason is easy for me, before I can pare it down to the right name for the medicine) since the middle of July. I had been resisting, since as I understand it I will have to keep taking it forever, or I will gain the weight back. Further discussion is warranted on that, but basically I caved to pressure from two doctors (cardiologist and endocrinologist). I went into the endo’s office expecting to get a prescription, which I would submit to my pharmacy. I did get that, but I also got an immediate present of 4 free doses as a sample (that’s how drug dealers operate, right?). I started at and am still at the minimum dose.

It is worth noting that in the previous 2 years I had lost 70 pounds on my own, and then gained 20 back. I am 72.5” tall, and at the start of this medication weight 288.

In the intervening 15 weeks, I have lost 16 pounds. This is fine with the endo, but not fast enough for the cardio. In 4 weeks I see the endo again, and I expect to be bumped up to the next dosage level (there are 4 levels). I am okay with this, although apprehensive about increasing side effects (acid stomach, constipation among others).

I do have a probably unrealistic goal, which is to get below 225 pounds (that’s 47 more pounds to lose, for those keeping score). That should put me at merely overweight rather than obese, for the first time in maybe 12 years or so. At a pound a week, that would only take me a year, but I have my doubts how long I can keep losing at that rate. I am exercise challenged, with arthritis in one hip and both knees, also because I just kind of hate it.

I’ve always been told that losing the first 5 lbs is far more important than the last 5 lbs.

Yeah, me, too, and I have arthritis in both knees. Losing weight made a big difference, but since I started walking daily (up to just under 2 miles) my knees are actually much better. I have almost no pain. I can really tell the difference going up stairs. My knees feel stronger, and it’s easier going.
