Weight loss/regain after hospitalization?

I was recently hospitalized for about two weeks. I was on clear liquids and whatever came down the IV. For the most part, I was completely immobile. When I was finally discharged, I’d lost about 15 to 20 pounds.

I know everyone is different, but are there averages out there for the ratio of fat to muscle atrophy? That is, I know I lost some fat pounds, but was it mostly muscle weight I lost?

And now what? Over the past year or so, I dropped about fifty pounds via exercise (cardio and weights) and changing eating habits. I never would have crash dieted like this—so now that it happened, is there any way to minimize the rebound?

I got the all-clear to exercise from my doctors, so am feeling the effects of two weeks of absolute sedentarianism (i.e., low-weight squats are hard and painful the next day). Any ideas of what I should expect for the next … two weeks? Two months? Any way to capitalize on whatever gain (loss) there is? Aside from the root cause of the hospitalization, do the recovery curves (fitness-wise) generally match the original downward curve?

If you can find out or figure out approximately how many calories a day you were getting in the hospital, and estimate how many calories a day you were using on average, you can get a ballpark estimate of how much weight you lost in fat. Presumably whatever’s left over in your weight loss would be due to muscle atrophy.

AFAIK, all you have to do to avoid regaining the fat weight is watch your caloric intake. You will certainly put some of the muscle mass back on as you work back up to your regular exercise levels.
