Weight loss surgery dopers: I'm coming!

Yep, and you couldn’t eat any potatoes, which I had specifically made extra knowing you liked them.

Now that I’m this far out, I can eat potatoes

OK, guys, enough impatinence! Mr. Norinew brought me home yesterday, as well as a lovely new monitor so I have access!

So good of Gingy to call me in the hospital for a status report! Thanks!

My surgeon is also generous with the Dilaudid he gives you to take home. I have 4 mg. every three hours.

Have to go back in a week to get the staples, drain, and IV port removed. I don’t expect that will be fun, but he gave me instrucitons for using a little extra Dilaudid first so it won’t be so bad.

Right now, I’m very limited. Four oz. of clear liquids an hour, two oz. of pureed food every two hours. Fortunately, right now that’s plenty.

I am planning to stay sugar-free through the rapid weight loss phase (about a year to a 18 mos.) to maximize weight loss. After that, I’ll see if I can eat some regular sugar without it driving me to binge! It’ll all be trial and error.

Thanks so much, everyone, for your support!

YAY! I’m so happy that you are on “the losing side” of this experience! jumps around all excited

norinew, I’ve come into this very late, but I wanted to add my support, encouragement and congratulations.
I’m thinking about lap banding for myself. I’m probably going to an informational seminar at a local hospital in the next month or so.
I asked my doctor about last year, but my health cooperative decided I wasn’t sick enough to need any help. My BMI is nearly 50, but I don’t have any complications yet. :dubious:
So, I’m going to check on the self pay route. If we can afford it, I’m in.
Glad you’re doing well.

If you have to go the self-pay route, check for doctors in Brazil. It’s much cheaper to have surgery there and it’s as safe as having it here. (I had my post-weight-loss plastic surgery done there).

Norinew:

Congratulations - I was thinking of you and am glad you’re home & doing well!

VCNJ~

So, now are you thin and beautiful?

Congratulations on making it to the other side! I’m glad it went well.

Although I had the RNY, like OpalCat, I also lost about a pound a day. I kept track of it on paper, as well as measurements of my waist, hips, arms, etc. In terms of weight loss, this is the fun part. In terms of eating…not so much. But the time will fly by and you’ll be healthy and svelte in no time!

Sigh. Not yet. In fact, as of Sunday, the hospital scale (they didn’t weigh me, but on one of our walks down the hall, hubby and I couldn’t resist the urge for me to get on the scale to just see), I’d gained 4 lbs!

Actually, at this point, I’m still lugging around a lot of excess IV fluids, and am very swollen. An acquaintaince who saw me last night wanted to know if I was pregnant again!  But, I kinda sorta am, in a way. Approx 10 mos. from now, I will have delivered myself of the weight of a smallish person!

And damn you anyway, Ginger, you got me thinking about sugar-free popsicles and I haven’t been able to get to the store to get any yet! :stuck_out_tongue:

Fluid-retention right after surgery is super common and a lot of WLS patients artificially “gain” weight for a short period immediately following surgery. I bet when the fluid weight is gone you will have lost some mass as well

I can’t tell you how happy and excited I am for you!

Thanks, Opal. I’m happy and excited, too.

I’m trying not to focus too much on the weight loss aspect right now. I’m trying to focus more on the healing aspect.
